Sree Adukkath Bhagavathy Temple in Kundamkuzhy, Kasaragod—an ancient shrine over 400 years old, features a sacred pond that is home to more than five hundred turtles, symbolizing the Kurma (tortoise) incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
At the heart of the pond stands an idol of Kurma Avatar, believed to be residing there as Dhanvantari Murthy, following the request of Adukkath Bhagavathy. Revered as the divine provider, Bhagavathy feeds these turtles, and devotees offer prayers through the ritual of Aamayoottu—feeding the turtles—as a spiritual cure for skin diseases.
This unique tradition has been practiced for centuries.
Every day, after the Ucha Puja, chief priest Melshanthi Muralikrishnan Namboothiri offers Anna Nivedya, followed by the devotees' Aamayoottu. Around 20 kilograms of white rice are used daily, with offerings made from the steps of the mandapam between 12 noon and 1 pm. On average, 100 to 125 devotees participate in this ritual, with a fee of Rs. 20 per offering. Only those who register before 10:30 am are allowed to perform the offering on the same day.
The temple is located in the serene grove of Molothu Kavu, about three kilometers from the Vallakkunnu bus stop on Bandadka road. The presiding deity is Goddess Mahishasura Mardini. The turtle temple lies to the south of the Kavu. Local belief holds that Vishnu, in his Kurma form, arrived here to witness the divine dance of the Theyyam performers, and at Bhagavathy’s request, stayed on to bless the land and its people. Because of this, the turtles are considered sacred and never harmed—legend tells of a man who once ate a turtle from the pond and faced the wrath of the goddess, leading to the ruin of his family.
The pond remains full even in scorching summers, although turtles are less visible then, preferring to stay underwater or move to nearby forests to stay cool. They lay their eggs within the sacred grove, and during the monsoon season, the pond teems with turtles, making the divine presence all the more palpable.
അടുക്കത്ത് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
ശ്രീ അടുക്കത്ത് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം കാസർഗോഡ് ജില്ലയിലെ ബേഡടുക്ക ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിന്റെയും ബേഡകം ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെയും അതി പുരാതനമായ ഒരു ദേവീക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. കാസർഗോഡ്-കാഞ്ഞങ്ങാട് ഹൈവേയിലെ പൊയിനാച്ചി ജംഗ്ഷനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള 15 കിലോമീറ്റർ കിഴക്കായി, ബന്തടുക്ക റോഡിലെ വേലക്കുന്ന് ബസ് സ്റ്റോപ്പിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മൂന്നുകിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്കുവശത്താണ് ഈ വിശുദ്ധസ്ഥലം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. സമൃദ്ധമായ കാട്ടുമരങ്ങളാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഒരു കാവിൽ, വിശാലമായ ഒരു മൈതാനത്തിന്റെ നടുവിലായാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
ഈ കാവിന്റെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്ത്, അങ്ങേയറ്റം അപൂർവ്വമായ ആമകളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ആമക്കുളം കാണാം. ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ദേവി മഹിഷാസുരമർദ്ദിനിയായ ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതിയാണ് — ശംഖ്, ചക്രം, വില്ല്, അമ്പ് എന്നീ ദിവ്യായുധങ്ങൾ കൈകളിൽ ധരിച്ച്, കിരീടധാരിണിയായ, ത്രിനേത്രയായ ദേവി മഹിഷാസുരന്റെ തലത്തിൽ ചവിട്ടിനിൽക്കുന്ന രൗദ്രസുന്ദരരൂപത്തിലാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. മഹിഷവധാനന്തര ഘോരരൂപിണിയായ ദേവിയെ ദേവതകളും മഹർഷിമാരും ചേർന്ന് സ്തുതിക്കുകയും ബഹുമാനപൂർവം ആരാധനയ്ക്കായി സ്ഥാനമൊരുക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത പുണ്യഭൂമിയിലാണീ ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്.
ശ്രീ അടുക്കത്ത് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം അങ്ങിനെയാണ് ധാരാളം ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്കും ചരിത്രസഞ്ചാരികൾക്കും ആകർഷണമായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ശ്രീ അടുക്കത്ത് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗത്തുള്ള കാവിനുള്ളിൽ ഒരു നാഗാലയം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇവിടെ സർപ്പദോഷ പരിഹാരത്തിനായി പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും ആചാരങ്ങളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ആമക്കുളത്തിന്റെയും അതിലെ നൂറുകണക്കിന് ആമകളുടെയും പേരിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പല ഇടങ്ങളിലെയും ഭക്തർക്കിടയിൽ സുപ്രസിദ്ധമായിരിക്കുന്നത്.
മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ കൂർമ്മാവതാര സങ്കൽപം അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഈ ആമകളെ ദൈവിക സാന്നിധ്യത്തോടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. 100 മുതൽ 150 വരെയുള്ള വയസ്സുള്ള ആമകൾ ഇതിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം, അവയിൽ ചിലത് പോലും ശ്രീ അടുക്കത്ത് ഭഗവതിയുടെ നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള ചരിത്രത്തിനും സാക്ഷ്യമായിത്തീർന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.ആമകൾക്ക് വേണ്ടിയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേക അന്നനിവേദ്യങ്ങൾ ഒരുക്കുന്നത്. ആനത്തഴമ്പ്, പാലുണ്ണി, മറ്റ് ത്വക്ക് രോഗങ്ങൾ മുതലായവയുടെ ശാന്തിക്കും രോഗമുക്തിക്കും വേണ്ടി ആമകൾക്ക് അന്നദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് "ആമയൂട്ട്" എന്ന പാരമ്പര്യ വഴിപാടിന്റെ ആകാരം.

വനശാസ്താവിന് ശർക്കരപ്പായസം പ്രധാന വഴിപാടാണ്. അതുപോലെ ആമകൾക്ക് "ചോറൂട്ട്" നിവേദ്യം അർപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ് — മറ്റുക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഈ രീതി കാണാനില്ല. ഇതോടൊപ്പം, ഇവിടെ ഭഗവതിക്ക് എരുമപ്പാൽ നിവേദ്യമുണ്ടാകുന്നത് വിശേഷതയാണ്. ഭക്തർ ത്രികാലപൂജയും (ഭക്തിസേവ) ഇവിടെ നടത്താറുണ്ട്.
