Iravil Sree Mahavishnu Temple Eriya Kasaragod

The temple’s annual festival is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Medam (April–May), with the main festivities observed on the Thiruvonam nakshatram day. The presiding deity is Lord Mahavishnu in the form of Sri Krishna, who appeared before Devaki inside the prison of Kamsa—a rare and spiritually significant depiction. The original sanctum (moolasthanam) of the deity is said to be the nearby Chengulam Kavu.

The temple also houses sub-deities including Durga, Sastha, Tiruvalayappan (a form of Shiva), and Rakshas. The temple, which faces east, is admired for its stunning sculptures and intricate carvings that reflect traditional Kerala craftsmanship. Historically, it was a temple of immense wealth and prominence, but over time it fell into neglect and disrepair.

Thanks to dedicated restoration efforts, it has since been renovated and revived. An intriguing feature of the temple is a deep natural cave located behind it, which extends approximately 400 meters into the earth, adding an air of mystery and ancient depth to the sacred site. The temple is under the spiritual authority of the Iravil Vazhunor Thantri lineage.

ഇറവിൽ ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം

കാസർഗോഡ് ജില്ലയിലെ പുല്ലൂർ-പെരിയ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഇറവിൽ ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം മലബാറിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പഴയകാലങ്ങളിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം അപാര സമ്പത്താൽ സമൃദ്ധമായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. എന്നാൽ ടിപ്പുവിൻറെ പടയോട്ടത്തിനുശേഷം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ധനവും ആഭരണങ്ങളും നഷ്ടമായി, പിന്നീട് ദീർഘകാലം ജീർണാവസ്ഥയിലായി. ഒടുവിൽ നാട്ടുകാരുടെയും ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെയും ചേക്കേറാനായ പരിശ്രമഫലമായി ക്ഷേത്രം നവീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, അതിനോടൊപ്പം അതിൻറെ പഴയ പ്രതാപവും അൽപം തിരികെ കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ സാധിച്ചു.

ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണു കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനം നല്കുന്ന രൂപത്തിലാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതനായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ദേവന്റെ ആരാധനരൂപം, കംസൻറെ തടവറയിൽ ദേവകിക്ക് ദർശനം നൽകിയ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനാണ്, അതീവ ദുർലഭമായ ഏകാന്ത ഭാവത്തിൽ. ഈ രൂപത്തിന്റെ മൂലസ്ഥാനം ചെങ്കുളം കാവാണ്. ദുർഗ്ഗാ ദേവി, ശാസ്താവ്, തിരുവാലയപ്പൻ (ശിവൻ), രക്ഷകൻ എന്നിവരാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകൾ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രാചീനകേരള ശൈലിയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച സങ്കീർണ്ണമായ ശില്പകലകളും കൊത്തുപണികളും ചേർത്ത് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

ചുവർചിത്രങ്ങളും ശില്പങ്ങൾക്കും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പിന്നിൽ ഏകദേശം 400 മീറ്ററോളം നീളമുള്ള ഒരു പ്രകൃതിഗുഹയും നിലവിലുണ്ട്, അത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ആധികാരികതയും ഐതിഹ്യപരതയും വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. വാർഷികമായി മേടമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവോണം നക്ഷത്രദിനത്തിൽ ആചരിക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവം — ഇറവിൽ ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവം — ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ ഏറെ ആരാധനയും ആകാംക്ഷയും ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ആഘോഷമാണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ ക്ഷേത്രം മലബാർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാണ്.
