Kizhur Sastha Temple, an ancient shrine, is located in Chandragiri, about 10 km north of Bekal in Kasaragod district.
Dedicated to Lord Sastha (Ayyappa), this historic temple is popularly known as the Chandragiri Kizhur Sastha Temple.
The principal deity of the temple is Lord Sastha (Ayyappa), with Goddess Bhagavathy and Lord Subramanya also enshrined. The temple’s legend is linked to the Sastha Temple at Chambravattom in Malappuram.
It is believed that the Sastha of Chambravattom was traveling northward and, upon reaching Chandragiri, was captivated by the area's natural beauty. He settled in a forest that belonged to a prominent tharavad (ancestral family), who later enshrined the deity and worshipped him as their family god, eventually leading to the establishment of the temple.
The temple is renowned for its Patt Ulsavam (Song Festival), with two major celebrations—Cheriya Patt in the month of Thulam (October-November) and Valiya Patt in Vrichikam (November-December). During the festival, professional singers perform devotional songs in praise of the deity, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere.
കിഴുർ ശ്രീ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം
കാസർഗോഡ് പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള ചന്ദ്രഗിരി കോട്ടയ്ക്കടുത്തുള്ള പുരാതന ദേവീക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കിഴുർ ശ്രീ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം, ഉത്തരകേരളത്തിലെ ശബരിമല എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യം മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയിലെ ചംബ്രവട്ടം ശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു; ഒരിക്കൽ, ചംബ്രവട്ടം ശാസ്താവ് വടക്കോട്ട് യാത്ര ചെയ്യവേ ചന്ദ്രഗിരിയിലെ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കാട്ടുപ്രദേശത്തെത്തി, അവിടുത്തെ പ്രകൃതി സൗന്ദര്യം കാണുമ്പോൾ അവിടെ പാർക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
ഈ കാടുകൾ പ്രദേശത്തെ പ്രശസ്ത വള്ളിയോടൻ തറവാട്ടിൽ പെട്ടതായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു, അവർ ശാസ്താവിനെ കുടുംബദേവനായി ആരാധിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്ഷേത്രം തന്റെ വലിയ പാട്ടു ഉത്സവം കൊണ്ട് പ്രശസ്തമാണ്, ഇത് വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിൽ (നവംബർ) നടക്കുന്ന ഒരു പതിനേഴു ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവമാണ്, പ്രശസ്തരായ ഗായകരും കലാകാരന്മാരും ദേവന്റെ മഹത്വത്തെ പ്രകീർത്തിക്കുന്ന പരിപാടികൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
വലിയ പാട്ടു ഉത്സവം കൊടിയില വെയ്ക്കൽ ചടങ്ങോടെ ആരംഭിച്ച് ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ വലിയ പങ്കാളിത്തം കൊണ്ടാടപ്പെടുന്നു; രാവിലെ വിവിധ പൂജകളും ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് മഹാപൂജയ്ക്കുശേഷം അന്നദാനവും, വൈകുന്നേരം ഭജന, തായമ്പകം, രാത്രി തിടമ്പ് നൃത്തം എന്നിവ നടക്കുന്നു. ജാതിമതഭേദമന്യേ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ ഈ മഹോത്സവത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു, എല്ലാ ദിവസവും ഭക്തർക്കായി ഭക്ഷണവും നൽകപ്പെടുന്നു. ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ അവസാന ദിവസത്തിൽ വിഷ്ണുമൂർത്തി തെയ്യക്കോലത്തിന് ശേഷം കൊടിയിറക്കം നടത്തി ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കും.
