കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ അഞ്ചലിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 4 കിലോമീറ്റർ കിഴക്കായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് അഗസ്ത്യക്കോട് മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ കമിഴ്ന്നുകിടന്ന ബിംബം അഗസ്ത്യമുനിയുടേതാണെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം, ഇവിടത്തെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേരാണ് സ്ഥാനനാമമായത്. ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, അഗസ്ത്യമുനി ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരന്റെ ആജ്ഞാനുസരിച്ച് വനാന്തരങ്ങളിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി, ക്രൂര മൃഗങ്ങൾ സ്ഥലമൊഴിഞ്ഞു, അഗസ്ത്യമുനി ആശ്രമം കെട്ടി താമസമുറപ്പിച്ചു.
