Avaneeswaram is a quaint village located approximately 7 kilometers south of Pathanapuram town, 36 kilometers from Kollam, and 8.6 kilometers from Kottarakkara along the Kunnikode-Pathanapuram road within the Kollam district. It is dedicated to Mahadeva.
The ancient Avanishwaram Sri Mahadevar Temple is located in this area and is believed to be approximately 500 years old, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The primary significant occasion at the temple is Shivaratri, which occurs during the month of Kumbh. Additionally, the temple hosts grand celebrations for events such as Bhagavata Saptaham Vayana, Thiruvathira, and Thaipuyam Mahotsavam each year. The temple also honors various sub-deities, including Ganapati, Subrahmanya, Sri Krishna, and the Nagas.
Archana performed with vilva leaves is particularly favored by Lord Shiva, and Mrityunjaya Homa is regarded as one of the most vital offerings. The Rudrasukta Pushpanjali is also highly esteemed. As one of the deities in the Hindu Trinity, Shiva embodies destruction and is associated with auspiciousness, as indicated by the term "Shivam." However, no other deity in Hinduism exhibits such a fierce form and wrathful demeanor while also embodying the roles of both a monk and a householder. Many devotees of Lord Shiva are believed to possess the ability to conquer death, which may explain why Kerala is home to the highest number of Shiva temples.
ആവണീശ്വരം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ആവണീശ്വരം ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന 500 വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ആവണീശ്വരം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരന് സമർപ്പിച്ച ഒരു പൗരാണിക ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വിശേഷദിവസമാണ്, കൂടാതെ ഭാഗവത സപ്താഹം, തിരുവാതിര, തൈപ്പൂയ മഹോത്സവം എന്നിവയും ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരനാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ, നാഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവരെ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഉപദേവന്മാർക്കായി പ്രത്യേക നടകൾ ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ധാരാളം ദേവി ദേവന്മാർ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ശിവൻ എന്ന ദൈവിക രൂപം അവരിൽ നിന്നെല്ലാം വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ഹൈന്ദവ വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം, ത്രിമൂർത്തികളിൽ ഒരുമൂർത്തിയെന്ന നിലയിൽ ശിവൻ സംഹാരത്തിന്റെ ദേവനുമാണ്. ശിവം എന്ന പദത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥം മംഗളകരമായതാണെന്ന് പറയാം. എന്നാൽ, രൂപത്തിൽ കാട്ടാളത്തോട് സമാനമായും, ഭാവത്തിൽ കോപം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നതും, സന്യാസരൂപത്തിലും ഗൃഹസ്ഥാശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഭാവങ്ങളിലും ഒരേ സമയം നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു ദേവൻ ഹൈന്ദവ വിശ്വാസികൾക്കിടയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നില്ല. മരണത്തെ പോലും ജയിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ള ശിവനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം വളരെ കൂടുതലാണ്.
അതിനാൽ, കേരളത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത് അതിനാൽ തന്നെയാണ്. ശിവന്റെ കൂവളത്തിൽ പതിനാലു ദിവസങ്ങളോ ഇരുപത്തൊന്ന് ദിവസങ്ങളോ തുടർച്ചയായി അർച്ചന നടത്തുന്നത് ഭയം, ആപത്ത് എന്നിവയെ അകറ്റാൻ സഹായകമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, മൃത്യുജ്ഞയ ഹോമം വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു വഴിപാടാണ്. രുദ്രസൂക്ത പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലിയും ദോഷശാന്തിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും അനുയോജ്യമാണ്.
