The temple features the deities of Shastav in the sanctum sanctorum and Shiva Parvati beside him, flourishing in an open-air setting that blesses the devotees. The temple grounds serve as a sanctuary for peacocks, enhancing its serene atmosphere. Historically, worshippers visited this site to pay homage to a stone representation of the Lord, which was hidden beneath a forest canopy.
Over time, the worship dwindled, but local troubles prompted the community to gather and worship Umamaheswaran using stone lamps. This revival led to the establishment of the Sribhuthanathaswamy Trust, which oversaw the construction of both the Umamaheswara and Sribhuthanatha temples atop the hill, accessible by 329 steps. Nandikesan, representing the divine aspect of Shakti, carries out the orders of Sribhuthanathaswamy. Devotees come to Thirunada to ring bells in reverence to Nandikeshaswamy, believing that when a bell is worshipped and tied, it symbolizes the fulfillment of their wishes. This act removes obstacles to their desires, and the Lord grants them strength and determination.

കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കൊട്ടാരക്കരയിൽ നിന്നും പുത്തൂർ പോകുന്ന വഴിയിൽ ആറു കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ മനക്കരക്കാവ് കവലയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരും. മനക്കരക്കാവ് കവലയിൽ നിന്നും ഇടതുവശത്തേക്ക് ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ യാത്ര ചെയ്താൽ ശ്രീ ഭൂതനാഥസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രകവാടത്തിൽ എത്തും. ഭൂതനാഥൻ എന്നത് ഭൂമിയുടെ അധിപൻ, ഭൂമിയുടെ നാഥൻ, ഭൂമിയുടെ പരമശക്തി, ഭൂമിയുടെ രാജാവ് എന്നിവയെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഭൂതനാഥനായ ശാസ്‌താവിനാണ് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ശ്രീഭൂതനാഥസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം സമുദ്രനിരപ്പില്‍ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 3000 അടി ഉയരത്തില്‍ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലില്‍ ശാസ്താവും, തൊട്ടരുകിലായി ശിവപാര്‍വ്വതിമാര്‍ മേല്‍ക്കുരയില്ലാത്ത കോവിലില്‍ ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹം നല്‍കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരം മയിലുകളുടെ വിഹാരകേന്ദ്രമായും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ദേവസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ദൂരദർശനം അത്യന്തം മനോഹരമാണ്. ഏകദേശം 70 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ചുറ്റളവിലുള്ള ഭൂപ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കും. മാനം തെളിയുമ്പോള്‍ അറബിക്കടലിന്റെ തിരയിളക്കങ്ങള്‍ പോലും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയും. ഉദയാസ്തമയങ്ങള്‍ സമുദ്രകാഴ്ചകളേക്കാള്‍ അതിമനോഹരമാണ്. ഇവിടെ പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് കാടുമൂടിയിരുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് ശിലാരൂപത്തിലുള്ള ഭഗവാനെ ആരാധിക്കാൻ ആളുകൾ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നിരുന്നു. കാലക്രമത്തിൽ ആരാധനയിൽ കുറവുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, നാട്ടിൽ ഉണ്ടായ അനിഷ്ട സംഭവങ്ങൾ കാരണം നാട്ടുകാർ ചേർന്ന് കാട്ടുവഴികൾ തെളിയിച്ച് ഉമാമഹേശ്വരൻമാരെ കല്‍വിളക്കുകളിൽ ആവാഹിച്ച് ആരാധന നടത്തി.
പിന്നീട് ശ്രീഭൂതനാഥസ്വാമി ട്രസ്റ്റ് രൂപീകരിച്ച് മലമുകളിൽ ഉമാമഹേശ്വരക്ഷേത്രവും, ശ്രീഭൂതനാഥക്ഷേത്രവും നിർമ്മിച്ചു. ഇവിടെ എത്താൻ 329 പടവുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. നന്ദികേശൻ, ശ്രീഭൂതനാഥസ്വാമിയുടെ ആജ്ഞയെ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും പാലിക്കുന്ന ശക്തിയുടെ രൂപമാണ്. ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ തിരുനടയിൽ എത്തി മണി കെട്ടുന്നത് യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ നന്ദികേശസ്വാമിയ്ക്കാണ്. ഭക്തരുടെ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കാൻ മണി പൂജിച്ച് കെട്ടുമ്പോൾ, ഭക്തന്റെ ആഗ്രഹസിദ്ധിക്ക് തടസ്സങ്ങൾ നീങ്ങുകയും, ഇച്ഛാശക്തിയും ക്രിയാശക്തിയും രൂപത്തിൽ മഹാദേവൻ അനുഗ്രഹം നൽകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മണിയുടെ നാവ് മന്ത്രിക്കുന്നത് പ്രണവമുഖരിതമായ ഓംകാരനാദമാണ്. തിരുനടയിൽ എത്തി പേരും നാളും പറഞ്ഞ് രസീതെടുത്ത് മണി കെട്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുമ്പോൾ, മഹാദേവന്റെ അത്ഭുതകരമായ വരപ്രസാദം ഭക്തന്റെ ആഗ്രഹസിദ്ധിക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹമായി മാറുന്നു.
