Chatayamangalam Sri Mahadeva Temple is situated in Chatayamangalam, within the Kollam District. This location is approximately 44 kilometers north of Thiruvananthapuram and 30 kilometers south of Kottarakkara, along the Kottarakkara - Kilimanoor MC road.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Mahadev and is oriented towards the east. It is situated beneath the Jatayu rock. The temple also honors sub-deities including Lord Ganesha, Nagaraja, and Nagayakshi. Adjacent to the Sri Mahadeva temple lies a sacred tirtha pool, where devotees typically cleanse themselves by bathing in the Tirthakulam or washing their feet prior to entering the temple.
According to legend, Jatayu was slain by Ravana while attempting to protect Goddess Sita from him. The site of Jatayu's demise became known as Jadayumangalam, which later evolved into Chadayamangalam. It is believed that Jatayu brought a Sivalinga idol for worship, which was consecrated by Lord Sri Rama at this location. Additionally, it is thought that Jatayu's final rites were conducted in the presence of this Shiva. Some believe that Jadayan is another name for Lord Shiva, and the area where Jadayan resides is referred to as Jadayamangalam, later transformed into Chadayamangalam. The administration of the temple is overseen by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The annual festival, lasting ten days, is celebrated on the Thiruvathira star during the Malayalam month of Meenam. This festival features several special poojas, culminating in the Arattu ceremony at Arattukadavu, located approximately one kilometer from the temple.
The Meena Thiruvathira festival is a vibrant and colorful event. On the day of Arattu, a grand procession departs from the Sri Mahadeva temple, accompanied by Thalapoli, decorated parasols, caparisoned elephants, chendamelam, pandimelam, mayilattam, and kuthira ezhunnallippu. The procession circles around Jatayu Para, proceeds to the Kunhaiyappa temple, and then returns to the main temple. Mahasivarathri is also observed with distinctive poojas and spiritual programs. Additionally, the annual Pongala Mahotsavam attracts numerous women devotees from various regions of Kerala. Various events, including Sapthaham, Maha Ganapathy Homam, and Lasharchana, are celebrated on specific days. During the Makaravilak Maholsavam, devotees known as Ayyappas travel to Sabarimala after visiting the Sri Kunjayappa temple to receive blessings from Sri Mahadevan.
ചടയമംഗലം മേജർ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
ചടയമംഗലത്ത്, കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ, ചടയമംഗലം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കൊട്ടാരക്കര - കിളിമാനൂർ എംസി റോഡിൽ, തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുനിന്ന് 44 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കേയും, കൊട്ടാരക്കരയിൽ നിന്ന് 30 കിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്കേയും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം മഹാദേവനേയ്ക്ക് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഗണപതി, നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകൾ. ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപം ഒരു പുണ്യതീർത്ഥക്കുളം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.
ഭക്തർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് തീർത്ഥക്കുളത്തിൽ കുളിക്കുകയോ കാൽ കഴുകുകയോ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതാണ്.
ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, ലങ്കാധിപനായിരുന്ന രാവണനിൽ നിന്ന് സീതാദേവിയെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചപ്പോൾ ജഡായു കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. ജഡായു കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലത്തെ ജഡായുമംഗലം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു, പിന്നീട് ഇത് ചടയമംഗലമായി മാറി. ജഡായു ശിവലിംഗ വിഗ്രഹം കൊണ്ടുവന്നുവെന്നും ശ്രീരാമൻ ഇവിടെ പവിത്രമാക്കിയെന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ജടയൻ എന്നത് ശിവന്റെ മറ്റൊരു നാമമാണെന്നും ജഡയൻ വസിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം ജഡയമംഗലമാണെന്നും കാലക്രമേണ ഇത് ചടയമംഗലമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ജഡായു ശിവലിംഗ വിഗ്രഹം ഇവിടെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, ശ്രീരാമൻ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ പവിത്രമാക്കിയെന്നും, ജഡായുവിന്റെ അന്തിമ കർമ്മങ്ങൾ ഈ ശിവ സാന്നിധ്യത്തിൽ നടന്നുവെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ജടയൻ എന്നത് ശിവന്റെ മറ്റൊരു നാമമാണെന്നും, ജഡയൻ വസിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ ജഡയമംഗലമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു, കാലക്രമേണ ഇത് ചടയമംഗലമായി മാറിയെന്നുമുള്ള ഒരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകാര്യങ്ങൾ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡാണ് കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
മീനമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ പത്ത് ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന മീന തിരുവാതിര ഉത്സവം ഇവിടെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
ഉത്സവസമയം ചില പ്രത്യേക പൂജകൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു, ആറാട്ടുകടവിൽ ആറാട്ടോടെ ഉത്സവം കൊടിയിറങ്ങും. ആറാട്ടുകടവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ്. മീന തിരുവാതിര മഹോത്സവം അത്യന്തം ആകർഷകമായ കാഴ്ചയാണ്. ആറാട്ടുദിവസം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉത്സവം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. മകരവിളക്ക് മഹോൽസവത്തിനായി അയ്യപ്പന്മാർ വാദ്യങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയുള്ള പേട്ട തുള്ളൽ ഘോഷയാത്ര ശ്രീ കുഞ്ഞയപ്പ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തുകയും, അവിടെ ദർശനം നടത്തുകയും, ശ്രീ മഹാദേവനിൽ നിന്ന് അനുഗ്രഹം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ശേഷം ശബരിമലയിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നു.
