Chennamath Shiva temple is located about 1 kilometer north of Chathannoor in Kerala's Kollam district. The main deity, Shiva, is represented by a south-facing shivling on a square pedestal.
Chennamath Temple, a remarkable example of medieval Kerala temple architecture, dates back to the 13th century C.E. This medium-sized stone temple, constructed in the traditional Kerala style, is located in a valley surrounded by paddy fields on three sides. The temple features a circular Vimana of the Ekatala Alpavimana type, adhering to the Sandhara style, which includes an internal circumambulatory passage. The Srikovil is covered with a unified conical roof made of small tiles. Flanking the main entrance are two-armed Dwarapalakas (temple guards).
Lord Shiva, the principal deity, faces south, while the idol of Goddess Parvathy, enshrined at the rear of the Srikovil, faces north. The temple also houses sub-shrines for Ganapathy, Sastha, and Rakshas. The sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha) is a square chamber with a square Sikhara (temple tower) atop it, featuring a Sivalinga on a square pedestal (Peeda). The Balipida (sacrificial altar) is positioned on the eastern side in the open. Various Kostha devadas (niche deities) are seen adorning the Gavakshas (arched windows) of the temple, while the walls of the Srikovil are constructed from stone, featuring pierced window frames.
Vattezhuthu inscriptions on the Adhishtana (plinth) of the Srikovil indicate that construction began in 446 M.E. (1271 C.E.) and was completed in 448 M.E. (1273 C.E.). The construction was overseen by Chathannur Varian Devan Uzhuthiran, and the cost, excluding the Peeda and idol, amounted to 105 'achu', a currency of the time. Koyilpalli Sankaran Chathan supervised the work. Originally, the temple was managed by the landlords of Mamballi Madom from Chengannur, but it is now owned and managed by the N.S.S. Karayogam of the same area.
In 2005, the Department of Archaeology carried out scientific conservation of the conical superstructure of the Srikovil, including the main door.
ചേന്നമത്ത് മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം
ചാത്തന്നൂരിൽ നിന്ന് 1 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ചേന്നമത്ത് മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം, മഹാദേവനോടു സമർപ്പിച്ച ഒരു അപൂർവ്വ സൃഷ്ടിയാണ്. 13-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ നിർമ്മിതമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ചെങ്കല്ലിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള അതിന്റെ മനോഹാരിതയാൽ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. നെൽവയലുകൾ ചുറ്റിയ ഒരു ചെറിയ കുന്നിന്റെ താഴ്വരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ചതുരാകൃതിയിലുള്ള പീഠത്തിൽ ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരനെ തെക്ക് ദർശനമായി നിലകൊള്ളിക്കുന്നു. വാസ്തുവിദ്യയിൽ അതിന്റെ വൈദഗ്ധ്യം കാരണം, എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി ആളുകൾ ഈ പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രം സന്ദർശിക്കാൻ എത്തുന്നു. പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പിന്റെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായാണ് ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
ഗ്രാനൈറ്റ് കല്ലിൽ നിർമ്മിതമായ വട്ട ശ്രീകോവിൽ അത്യന്തം ആകർഷകമാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം മഹാ ശിവരാത്രിയാണ്. ഗണപതി, രക്ഷസ്, ശാസ്താവ് എന്നിവരാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകൾ. ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ പിൻഭാഗത്ത് പാർവതിദേവിയുടെ പ്രതിമയും വടക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ചെറിയ ടൈലുകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പാകിയ ഏകീകൃത കോണിക മേൽക്കൂര ശ്രീകോവിലിന് വേണ്ടി ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ പ്രധാന വാതിലിന്റെ ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലും ആയുധധാരികളായ രണ്ട് ദ്വാരപാലകരെ കാണാം.
കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥാപിച്ച ബലിപീഠം തുറന്ന നിലയിലാണ്, കൂടാതെ ഗവാക്ഷങ്ങളിൽ ദേവതകളുടെ നിരയുണ്ട്. ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ ഭിത്തിയും അപൂർവ്വമായ കൽപ്പണികൊണ്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു, മതിലിന്റെ ഓരോ ഭാഗത്തും വാതായനങ്ങളുടെ നിരയുണ്ട്. പ്രധാനമായും വടക്കും തെക്കും ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ യാഥാർത്ഥമല്ലാത്ത വാതിലുകൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള കാന്തയിൽ പ്രാണാലം സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. സ്തംഭത്തിൽ വൃത്താകാരമായ കുമുദ, കാന്ത, കപോത തുടങ്ങിയ നിരകൾ രൂപീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ചുവരിന്റെ മുകളിൽ ശില്പവേല കല്ലിൽ നിർമ്മിതമാണ്, നിലവറയുടെ കോണുകൾ ജോടിയാക്കിയ തൂണുകളാൽ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഗവാക്ഷങ്ങളിലെ ദേവതകൾ ഘടികാര ദിശയിൽ ക്രമീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലിലെ അധിഷ്ഠാനത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന വട്ടെഴുത്ത് ലിഖിതങ്ങൾ, ചാത്തന്നൂർ ശാസനം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്, ക്ഷേത്രനിർമ്മാണം കൊല്ലവർഷം 446-ൽ (C.E.1271) ആരംഭിച്ച് 448-ൽ (C.E. 1273) പൂർത്തിയായതായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പീഠവും മൂർത്തിയും ഒഴികെയുള്ള നിർമ്മാണത്തിനായി ചെലവഴിച്ച തുക 105 'അച്ച്' എന്ന നാണയമായിരുന്നു. കൊയിൽപള്ളി ശങ്കരൻ ചാത്തനാണ് നിർമ്മാണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. 'ചാത്തന്നൂർ വാരിയൻ ദേവൻ ഉഴുതിരൻ' എന്നിവരാണ് നിർമ്മാണം നടത്തിയത്. ചെങ്ങന്നൂരിലെ മാമ്പള്ളി മഠത്തെ ജന്മിമാരുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്രം. നിലവിൽ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണച്ചുമതല മാമ്പലിക്കുന്ന് എൻഎസ്എസ് കരയോഗം നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നു. പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പ് 2005-ൽ വാതിലടക്കം പ്രധാന ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ കോണാകൃതിയിലുള്ള ഉപരിഘടന ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി സംരക്ഷിച്ചു.
