Chamundi, one of the primary forms of Adiparashakti, holds a significant place in Shakta tradition. Among the seven main aspects of Adiparashakti, Chamundi is revered for her fierce and protective nature. The Dharmapuri Sri Chamundeshwari Temple is one of the oldest and most famous temples dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, and devotees experience her blessings primarily on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.

Devotees visit the temple seeking blessings for various purposes, including solutions to challenges related to childlessness, domestic disturbances, possession by evil spirits, family issues, professional struggles, health problems, and enemy-related troubles. The temple's goddess is seen as a protector of the land, nature, and her devotees, providing divine intervention and solutions for these issues. The annual temple festival takes place in the month of Kumbham (February–March), during which significant rituals such as Mahachandikayagam, Pongala, Sree Chakra Navavarana Puja, and the annual Kalasam are conducted. Among these, the Chandikayagam holds special importance.

This ritual is central to the Amnaya (a sacred way of performing rituals) of the Goddess. Through the chanting of the 13 chapters of the Markandeya Purana—one of the sacred 11 Puranas—Tantric Saparyavidhis (ritualistic worship) are performed, invoking the Goddess's blessings in her complete form. The significance of Chandikayagam is rooted in the belief that Goddess Chamundi manifested to the Trimurtis (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) as Chandikagni, the divine fire. Sages and ancient texts describe this sacred fire as Chandikagni, and the Yagagni (sacrificial fire) is often considered the representation of this divine power. Thus, through this powerful ritual, the devotees receive the benevolent grace of the Goddess, ensuring protection, prosperity, and well-being.

കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കുന്നത്തൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ധർമ്മപുരി ശ്രീ ചാമുണ്ഡേശ്വരി ക്ഷേത്രം തെക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെ അത്യന്തം പുരാതനവും പ്രശസ്തവുമായ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ചാമുണ്ഡേശ്വരി ദേവി, ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവിയുടെ ക്രൂരാവതാരമായ കാളിയെയാണ് പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ചാമുണ്ഡ ദേവിയുടെ ഉത്ഭവകഥാ ദേവീ മാഹാത്മ്യത്തിലും മാർക്കണ്ഡേയ പുരാണത്തിലും വിവരിക്കുന്നു. കഥ അനുസരിച്ച്, മുണ്ടാസുരനും ചണ്ഡാസുരനും എന്ന രണ്ട് അസുരന്മാരുമായുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവി കാളിയുടെ രൂപം സാക്ഷാത്കരിക്കുകയും അവരെ വധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ ശക്തി ദേവി "ചാമുണ്ഡ" എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ചാമുണ്ഡേശ്വരി ദേവിയെ ആരാധിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ധർമ്മപുരി ക്ഷേത്രം പൗരാണികമായി പ്രാധാന്യം വഹിക്കുന്നു.

ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ഈ ദേവിക്ക് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചുള്ള തൊഴിൽ, കുടുംബ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ, ശത്രുദോഷങ്ങൾ, രോഗശാന്തി, പ്രേതബാധ, സന്താനഭാഗ്യം എന്നിവക്കായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥനയ്ക്ക് എത്തുന്നു. ഉദ്ദേശിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങൾക്കും നന്മയ്ക്കും ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം ലഭിക്കുമെന്ന വിശ്വാസം വലിയതാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ (ഫെബ്രുവരി–മാർച്ച്) ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. മഹാചണ്ഡികായാഗം, പൊങ്കാല, ശ്രീചക്ര നവാവരണ പൂജ, വാർഷിക കലശം എന്നിവയും ഈ ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ചു ഭക്ത്യാദരപൂർവ്വം നടത്തുന്നു. ചണ്ഡികായാഗം, ദേവിയുടെ ആമ്നായ പാഠങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയ താന്ത്രിക സപര്യ വിദ്യകളിൽ അത്യന്തം വിശേഷമുള്ളതിനാൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. ദേവീ മാഹാത്മ്യത്തിലെ 13 അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങൾ പാരായണം ചെയ്ത്, താന്ത്രിക രീതിയിൽ ദേവിയെ ഉപാസിക്കുന്നു, ഈ യാഗംദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ദേവി തൻറെ പൂർണ്ണരൂപത്തിൽ ഭക്തരെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. ദേവി ത്രിമൂർത്തികൾക്ക് മഹത്തായ ചണ്ഡികാഗ്നി രൂപത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ, യാഗത്തിലെ അഗ്നിയെ ചണ്ഡികാഗ്നി എന്നു വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഋഷികൾ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.
