Kottankulangara Devi Temple is a Hindu shrine dedicated to the goddess Durga Bhagavathy, also known as Aadi Shakthi, who is revered as the supreme mother of power. This temple is situated in the village of Chavara, in the state of Kerala, India.
The land on which the temple stands was formerly part of a serene forest, enveloped by a dense array of trees, shrubs, and vines. In the northwest corner of this area, there was a small, deep pond referred to as Bhoothakulam, which the local inhabitants believed served as a refuge for venomous snakes. To the east, a large, expansive pond was present. During periods of rainfall, a stream would emerge from this pond, enriching the surrounding land and making it suitable for cultivation. Due to the abundance of grass and clean water, cow-herders from nearby regions would gather there with their livestock.
In ancient times, it was customary for young women to create flower garlands and light the pooja lamps in the historic Kudumba temples. Embracing this tradition, cow-herders donned female attire to perform poojas within the temple. They boiled a milky liquid derived from coconut kernel, extracted medicinal oil known as Urukku Velichenna, and presented the solid residue (Kottan) as Naivedyam to the goddess. The Kottankulangara Festival, also known as Kottankulangara Chamayavilakku, takes place annually at the temple, attracting men from across the state and beyond who don female clothing. This cross-dressing is an integral part of the traditional rituals, and during the evening, participants carry traditional lamps in a procession to the temple, accompanied by a live orchestra. Many devotees visit the temple to receive the blessings of the goddess.
To honor the legend and origins of the temple, a model of the ancient structure is constructed each year.
Devotees form long lines stretching from Kunjalummoodu to Arattukadavu during the Devi's journey from Kunjalummoodu. Witnessing this spiritual procession brings immense joy to the devotees, who believe that this experience offers them comfort, mental peace, and relief from life's unforeseen challenges. Jeevatha Ezunnallathu primarily takes place in Devi temples. Participants don traditional attire, known as "Thattudukkal," with towels securely fastened around their waists and heads. They carry the Jeevatha on their shoulders while performing a step-dance. The legend associated with Jeevatha Ezhunnallathu suggests that the goddess visits her devotees, who present offerings of Anpara and Ezhu para to seek her blessings.

കൊട്ടൻകുളങ്ങര ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിലെ കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ, ചവറയിൽ ദേശീയപാതക്കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പ്രശസ്തമായ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ദുർഗ്ഗാ ഭഗവതിയാണ്, ജഗദീശ്വരിയും ആദിപരാശക്തിയുമായുള്ള അവളുടെ രൂപമാണ്. കൊട്ടൻകുളങ്ങര അമ്മ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ഭഗവതിയുടെ ചമയവിളക്ക് ഉത്സവം വളരെ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. മീനമാസത്തിലെ (മാർച്ച്/ഏപ്രിൽ) പത്ത്, പതിനൊന്ന് തീയതികളിലാണ് ഈ ഉത്സവം നടത്തുന്നത്. പുരുഷന്മാർ സ്ത്രീ വേഷത്തിൽ ചമയവിളക്ക് എടുക്കുന്നത് അഭീഷ്ട കാര്യങ്ങൾ സാധ്യമാക്കുന്നതിനായാണ്. ചമയവിളക്കിൽ പങ്കെടുത്താൽ പരാശക്തിയുടെ സഹായം ലഭിക്കുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ആൺ മക്കളെ പെൺകുട്ടികളാക്കുകയും ഭർത്താക്കന്മാരെ യുവതികളാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ ഗണപതി, പരമശിവൻ, ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, മാടൻ ഭഗവാൻ, നാഗരാജാവ്, യക്ഷിയമ്മ എന്നിവയാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രദേശം ഒരു കാലത്ത് വനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു, ചുറ്റുപാടുകൾ മരങ്ങളും ചെടികളും നിറഞ്ഞ ശാന്തമായ സ്ഥലം ആയിരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത് ഭൂതകുളം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള കുളം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ഇത് വിഷപ്പാമ്പുകളുടെ അഭയകേന്ദ്രമാണെന്ന് പ്രദേശവാസികൾ വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നു. കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു വലിയ, വിശാലമായ കുളം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ദിവസങ്ങളോളം മഴ പെയ്തപ്പോൾ അവിടെ നിന്ന് ഒരു അരുവി ഉത്ഭവിച്ചു, ഇത് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശത്തെ ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ഠവും കൃഷിയോഗ്യവുമാക്കി. ഈ സ്ഥലം പുല്ലും ശുദ്ധജലവും നിറഞ്ഞതിനാൽ അയൽ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള പശുപാലകർ അവരുടെ കന്നുകാലികളുമായി അവിടെ ഒത്തുകൂടും.
ഒരു ദിവസം ആ പ്രദേശത്ത് കുട്ടികൾക്ക് ഒരു നാളികേരം വീണു കിട്ടി. അവർ അത് അടുത്തുള്ള കല്ലിന്റെ മുകളിൽ വച്ചു കുത്തി പൊളിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ, ലോഹകഷ്ണം ആ കല്ലിൽ തട്ടിയപ്പോൾ അതിൽ നിന്ന് നിണം പുറത്ത് വന്നത് കണ്ട കുട്ടികൾ വീട്ടുകാരോട് പറഞ്ഞു. എല്ലാവരും അതു കാണാനായി എത്തി. പിന്നീട് പ്രമാണിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പ്രശ്‌നം പരിശോധിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ആ കല്ലിൽ പ്രപഞ്ചനാഥനും ആദിപരാശക്തിയുമായ ദുർഗ്ഗാ ഭഗവതി കുടികൊള്ളുന്നതായി കണ്ടെത്തി. ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം നാടിന്റെ ഐശ്വര്യമായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് മനസിലായതോടെ, ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന്, ആൺകുട്ടികൾ പെൺകുട്ടികളെ പോലെ അണിഞ്ഞു ഒരുങ്ങി ഭഗവതിക്ക് കൊറ്റൻ നിവേദ്യം അർപ്പിച്ചു. ഇതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയ്ക്കായി, പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ ചമയവിളക്ക് ഉത്സവം വർഷം തോറും ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കൊറ്റൻ നിവേദ്യമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ആചാരം.
