Kottukkal Cave Temple, or Kaltrikkovil in Malayalam, is a significant example of rock-cut architecture built between the 6th and 8th centuries CE. It is located in Kottukkal village near Anchal in Kollam district, Kerala, India.
The term Kottukkal, which translates to "Kothiya Kallu" or carved rock, refers to a rock-cut shrine. This site features two caves of differing sizes, both oriented towards the east, with a sculpture of the principal deity, Ganapathy, positioned between them. The smaller cave houses an idol of Hanuman, while the larger cave contains a monolithic representation of Nandi, the bull. Additionally, Lord Shiva is venerated in the temple in the form of a Shiva Ling.
Local lore suggests that the large rock was transported to the site by the incarnations of Shiva, including Nandi.
Nearby, a smaller rock known as 'chummaadu para' is believed to provide support and alleviate pain when the larger rock is placed upon the head. Historians trace the origins of this rock-cut temple back to the 7th century AD, attributed to 'Nedila Paranthaka Nedumchadayan,' who ruled the nearby region of Chadayamangalam.
Currently, the temple is located amidst expansive paddy fields, with daily rituals conducted under the auspices of the Travancore Devaswom Board. The serene and peaceful environment of the area draws numerous travelers, with the site accessible by a journey of 45 kilometers from Kollam.
The temple is sculpted from a massive block of stone. This structure is located amidst a paddy field and, when viewed from afar, resembles a resting elephant. Within the rock, there are two chambers measuring 10 feet in length and 8 feet in width, both sheltered by a single overhead stone. The temple features a Shiva linga accompanied by Nandi and Sri Hanuman, and it is thought to date back to the Pallava dynasty, specifically the 8th century BC, coinciding with the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram near Chennai.

കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം, കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കടയ്ക്കലിനടുത്തുള്ള ഇട്ടിവ ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ശിലാക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. കേരളസർക്കാരിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിൽ ഉള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, നിരവധി ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ശിവഭക്തനായ ഒരു സന്യാസിക്ക് ശിവന്റെ ഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന പാറയെക്കുറിച്ച് സ്വപ്നം കാണുകയും, പിന്നീട് ആ പാറയിൽ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നതാണ് ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യം. ശിവഭക്തരായ രണ്ട് ദേവതകൾ ബ്രഹ്മമുഹൂർത്തത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ ആകാശത്തിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയും, അവിടെ എത്തുമ്പോൾ കോഴികൂവുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് മറ്റൊരു ഐതിഹ്യം. സൂര്യോദയം ആണെന്നു കരുതി, അവിടെ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടുവെന്നത് കൂടി ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിന് കൃത്യമായ രേഖകൾ ലഭ്യമല്ല. ക്ഷേത്രോൽപ്പത്തിയെക്കുറിച്ച് ചരിത്രകാരന്മാരുടെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങൾ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ഏ.ഡി. ഏഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടും പതിനൊന്നും ഇടയിൽ ക്ഷേത്ര നിർമ്മാണം നടന്നതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. യന്ത്രങ്ങളുടെ സഹായം ഇല്ലാതെ പരമ്പരാഗത ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. പാണ്ഢ്യ രാജാവിന്റെ ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ച കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അതിനു ശേഷമാകാം കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. ശിവ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയും, ശിവന്റെ ഭൂതഗണാംഗമായ ശൂലധാരിയായ കാവൽക്കാരനും ഉള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ പാണ്ടി ദേശത്ത് ജടില പരാന്തകന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തോടടുത്താണ് ഉണ്ടായത്. കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും ഈ പ്രത്യേകത കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. കറ്റിക്കൽ ക്ഷേത്രം എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ഗുഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം പതിനൊന്ന് സെന്റ് സ്ഥലത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രം ഒറ്റപ്പാറയുടെ കിഴക്കു ഭാഗത്ത് അഭിമുഖമായാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പത്തടി നീളവും എട്ടടി വീതിയുമുള്ള രണ്ട് മുറികളുണ്ട്, ഇവയിൽ രണ്ട് ശിവലിംഗങ്ങൾ പാറയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച പീഠത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
മുറികളുടെ പുറത്ത് പാറയിൽ കൊത്തിയ ഗണപതി വിഗ്രഹം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. തെക്കു ഭാഗത്തെ മുറികളുടെ മുന്നിൽ അഷ്ടകോണത്തിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച കൽ മണ്ഡപം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. മണ്ഡപത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഭിത്തിയിൽ ഗണപതിയുടെയും മറുവശത്ത് നന്ദികേശന്റെയും രൂപങ്ങൾ കൊത്തി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ശിവലിംഗമാണ്. വടക്കു വശത്തെ മുറിക്കു മുന്നിൽ ഭൂത ഗണത്തിൽ ഹനുമാന്റെയും നന്ദികേശന്റെയും രൂപങ്ങൾ കാണാം. ചതുരാകൃതിയിലുള്ള മുറികളുടെ വാതിലുകളും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ഒറ്റപ്പാറയിൽ കൊത്തിയെടുത്തവയാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ കൊടിയ വേനലിലും വറ്റാത്ത ഒരു കുളമുണ്ട്, മഴ പെയ്താൽ വെള്ളം വെള്ളം ഒഴുകുന്നതിനുള്ള ഓവുചാലുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ, യോഗീശ്വരനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കല്ല് ക്ഷേത്രം ക്ഷേത്രമുറ്റത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു, കൂടാതെ ചുമ്മാട്പാറ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു പാറ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പിന്നിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
