The site serves as a shrine dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu, with Ganapathi, Subramanyan, Bhadra, Durga, Annapoorneswari, Nagarajavu, and Yakshi recognized as subordinate deities. A notable aspect of the temple is the chanting conducted for Nagapreethi during the Mandala period. Kalampat, or Kalamezhuthutu, represents a unique offering made to the serpent deities, serving as a ritualistic gesture intended to appease the Navanagas. The Navanagas consist of nine significant serpents, which are honored through the recitation of the Navanaga mantra.
These include Seshanagam, Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkodaka, Sanghapalaka, Gulika, Padman, Mahapadman, and Kaliyan. The ritual of Kalameshtu involves painting the serpents' kalam with five different colored powders, followed by singing praises and bestowing blessings upon them with Nanduni, after which the kalam is erased. This ceremony is traditionally conducted in homes, Kavus, and temples, under the belief that it serves to ward off malevolence and promote success and prosperity. This ritual holds significant importance during the Mandala period within the temple.

കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ഇരവിപുരത്തുനിന്ന് 650 മീറ്റർ അകലെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന വിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കുന്നത്ത്കാവ് ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ധാരാളം ഭക്തരുടെ സന്ദർശന കേന്ദ്രമായും, പ്രകൃതിയുടെ മനോഹാരിതയാൽ സമ്പന്നമായ ശാന്തമായ സ്ഥലമായും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ഭദ്ര, ദുർഗ്ഗ, അന്നപൂർണേശ്വരി, നാഗരാജാവ്, യക്ഷി എന്നിവരെ ഉപദേവതകളായി ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. പുരാതനമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ചതുർബാഹുവായ മഹാവിഷ്ണു വിഗ്രഹത്തിന് സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ചരിത്രം ഉണ്ട്.
മെയ്‌ മാസത്തിൽ പത്ത് ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവം നടക്കുന്നു. അത്തം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ കൊടിയേറി, തിരുവോണനാളിൽ ആറാട്ടോടെ കൊടിയിറങ്ങുന്നതോടെ ഈ ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കുന്നു. വിശേഷ പൂജകൾ, താലപ്പൊലി, സമൂഹ പൊങ്കാല, ദീപക്കാഴ്ച, ഗംഭീര കെട്ടുകാഴ്ച എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങൾ.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വിശേഷങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് മണ്ഡലക്കാലത്ത് നാഗപ്രീതിക്കായി നടത്തുന്ന കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും. സർപ്പ ദേവന്മാർക്കായി നടത്തുന്ന പ്രത്യേക വഴിപാടാണ് കളംപാട്ട് അഥവാ കളമെഴുത്തുപാട്ട്. നവനാഗങ്ങളുടെ പ്രീതിക്കുവേണ്ടി ആചാരാനുഷ്ടാനത്തോടെ നടത്തുന്ന വഴിപാടാണ് ഇത്.
നവനാഗങ്ങൾ ഒമ്പത് പേരിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു, ഇവരെ സ്രേഷ്ടമായ ഒമ്പത് നാഗങ്ങളെന്നു അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. നവനാഗ മന്ത്രം ചൊല്ലി അവരെ പ്രീതിപെടുത്തുന്നു. ഇവരിൽ ശേഷനാഗം, വാസുകി, തക്ഷകൻ, കാർക്കോടകൻ, ശംഘപാലകൻ, ഗുളികൻ, പത്മൻ, മഹാപത്മൻ, കാളി എന്നിവരാണ്. കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും പഞ്ചവർണപ്പൊടികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് സർപ്പങ്ങളുടെ കളം വരച്ച ശേഷം, നന്തുണി മീട്ടി ദേവസ്തുതി പാടുന്നു. ദേവതാവേശത്തോടെ വെളിച്ചപ്പെട്ട് അനുഗ്രഹം നൽകുകയും, പിന്നീട് കളം മായ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ദോഷനിവാരണം, കാര്യവിജയം, ഐശ്വര്യവർദ്ധനവ് എന്നിവയ്ക്കായി ഈ ചടങ്ങുകൾ വീടുകൾ, കാവുകൾ, ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മണ്ഡലകാലത്തെ അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളിൽ ഇത് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ചടങ്ങാണ്.
