Sree Mangalath Mahalakshmi Temple is a well-known site located in the Kollam district, specifically at Punthalathazham along the Kollam-Kannanallur road.
The Kanakadhara Sthotra archana holds significant importance in this temple, accompanied by meticulously conducted pujas and rituals each month on the occasion of the Makam star. Devotees are presented with offerings of ghee, saffron, and Aishwaryananayam as Prasad. Additionally, the day features annadanam, attracting hundreds of participants.
This temple is recognized as one of the oldest places of worship in Kerala, deeply rooted in ancient Tamil culture. Between 700 and 725 AD, Tamil Brahmins arrived in this region while returning from a pilgrimage. A group known as the Tamil Pillas, who were involved in agriculture and trade, migrated from the Thanjavur area of Tamil Nadu to various locations in Kollam, with some choosing to settle in this area. As the newer generations engaged in agricultural activities and cleared the surrounding forests, a tool struck a stone, resulting in blood splattering and the discovery of a stone lamp.
In the subsequent deva prashana (Ashtamangalya Prashnam), it was recognized that this location embodies the essence of Mahalakshmi, leading to the construction of a small temple where idol worship was conducted. As time passed, this shrine fell into disrepair. It is reported that the temple door remained locked for an extended duration, during which devotees would light a lamp and offer prayers to the goddess through a small opening to the right of the door.
ശ്രീ മംഗലത്ത് മഹാലക്ഷ്മി ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കൊല്ലം-കണ്ണനല്ലൂർ റോഡിൽ പുന്തലത്താഴത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് മംഗലത്ത് ശ്രീ മഹാലക്ഷ്മീ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഇത് കേരളത്തിലെ പുരാതനമായ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് തമിഴ് സംസ്‌കാരവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കൃത്യമായ പൂജകൾക്കും ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾക്കും വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകുന്നു. മഹാലക്ഷ്മി ദേവിയെ ആമുഖമാക്കി എല്ലാ മാസത്തിലും നടക്കുന്ന പൂജകളിൽ കനകധാര സ്തോത്ര അർച്ചനയും, രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഞായറാഴ്ചകളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഭാഗ്യസിദ്ധി സരസ്വതി പൂജയും ഏറെ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ഈ പൂജകൾ സമൂഹപൂജകളായി ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു, കൂടാതെ അനുഗ്രഹമായി പൂജചെയ്ത ഘതം (നെയ്യ്), കുങ്കുമം, ഐശ്വര്യനാണയം എന്നിവ വിതരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു.
അന്നദാനം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കു നൂറുകണക്കിന് ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു. AD 700-725 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ തമിഴ് ബ്രാഹ്മണർ ദേശാടനത്തിനു ശേഷം ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് എത്തി ഇവിടെ താമസമാക്കുകയും ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ തഞ്ചാവൂരിൽ നിന്നു വന്ന "തമിഴ്പിള്ളമാർ" എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ വിഭാഗം ആളുകൾ കാർഷികവൃത്തികളിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. അവർ ഇവിടെ ഒരു കല്ലിൽതട്ടി രക്തം പൊടിയുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു കൽവിളക്ക് കണ്ടെത്തി. ഒരു ദേവപ്രശ്നത്തിലൂടെ മഹാലക്ഷ്മി ദേവിയുടെ ചൈതന്യം ആ പ്രദേശത്ത് സാന്നിദ്ധ്യമാണെന്ന് മനസിലാക്കിയതിനെ തുടർന്നു ഒരു ചെറിയ കോവിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു.
കാലം കടന്നപ്പോൾ ഈ പ്രാചീന കോവിൽ ജീർണ്ണിച്ചു പോയി. വളരെക്കാലം കോവിലിന്റെ വാതിൽ അടഞ്ഞ നിലയിലായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ ഭക്തർ വാതിലിന്റെ വലതു ഭാഗത്തു നിന്ന് കൈകടത്തി വിളക്ക് വെച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ദേവിയെ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചിരുന്നതായും ഈ കഥയിൽ പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
