Mulamkadakam Devi temple is situated in the center of Kollam town, specifically in Mulamkadakam. This temple is devoted to Goddess Bhagavathy.
Garudan Thookam festival is celebrated annually on the Pathamudayam day, which falls on either April 23 or April 24, corresponding to the 10th day of Meda Masam. This ten-day festival commences on Vishu day, known as Medam 1. The shrine dedicated to the Devi is managed by the Viswakarma community, and a distinctive offering known as Ottada naivedyam is made at the temple. The festival features a variety of traditional elements, including Nadaswaram, melam, ezhunnallathu, processions, and unique rituals and pujas that are integral to the celebrations.
The temple exemplifies the traditional Kerala architectural style and includes a sarppa kavu, or grove. Within the temple, several upa devatas are worshipped, such as Yakshi, Nagas, Shiva, Nandi, and Ganapathi. As one of the ancient temples in Kollam, the Devi worshipped here is Goddess Bhadrakali, depicted in the form of a young girl. The festival, which is meticulously observed with scientific rituals, takes place every April to enhance the chaithanya, or vitality, of the deity. The festivities begin with a flag hoisting ceremony and continue until Medam 10.
The shrine is adorned with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, and traditional lamps, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Numerous cultural activities, including traditional performing arts, music, and dance, are showcased throughout the festival. A significant highlight is the Ottamthullal performance. On the final day, Kettukazhcha, or floats, are displayed, accompanied by caparisoned elephants, melam, fireworks, and sheevali. The concluding day features various cultural events and religious discourses, culminating in the Arattu, or holy bath, where the utsava murti of the deity is taken from the shrine for ritual bathing, accompanied by the presence of caparisoned elephants and melam.
ശ്രീ മുളങ്കാടകം ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം
ശ്രീ മുളങ്കാടകം ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ഒരു പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. കൊല്ലം നഗരത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രഭാഗത്ത്, മുളങ്കാടകത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊല്ലം തേവള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നും 1.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം. ഭഗവതി ദേവിക്കായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്, ഇവിടെ ദേവി ബാലികാ രൂപത്തിലുള്ള ഭദ്രകാളി ദേവിയാണ് ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും മേടമാസത്തിൽ, എല്ലാ ആചാരങ്ങളോടും കൂടി പത്ത് ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം (വിഷു ദിനത്തിൽ - മേടം 1 കൊടിയേറി) വിപുലമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ ചൈതന്യം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി, ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവം വർഷം തോറും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള ഗരുഡൻ തൂക്കം ഉത്സവം പത്താമുദയം നാളിൽ (ഏപ്രിൽ 23 അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 24) മേടമാസം 10 ന് നടക്കുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം വിശ്വകർമ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലാണ്.
