Palliyarakkav Devi Temple, an ancient site, is situated in Chavara Puthukkad within the Kollam district. This temple is devoted to the deity Bhadrakali.
The temple is under the jurisdiction of the Travancore Devaswom Board. Despite its modest size, it holds significant historical value. Each year, numerous devotees from across the nation visit the temple to partake in the ten-day Thotampattu Mahotsavam, seeking the blessings of the Goddess and offering Pongala in relation to the festivities. Thottampattu is a traditional and ceremonial art form performed to seek the blessings of Devi Bhadrakali.
The Thottam songs serve as ritualistic hymns associated with Theyyams, as well as Thottam and Vellattam events that are organized in their honor (the term thottam also signifies stotram, or praise). In Kerala, in addition to Theyyam, Thottam songs are performed for various other rituals, particularly in Bhadrakali temples. These songs represent the cultural and ritualistic expressions of the Theyam-making communities, including the Vannan, Malayan, (Pulayan) Anjuran, and Munnuran. Thottam marks the commencement of Theyyattam. Thotampattu functions as a hymn to invoke the divine and narrate the history of God.
പുതുക്കാട് പള്ളിയറക്കാവ് ശ്രീ ഭദ്രകാളി ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ചവറയിൽ പുതുക്കാട് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പുതുക്കാട് പള്ളിയറക്കാവ് ശ്രീ ഭദ്രകാളി ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം. ഭദ്രകാളി ദേവിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ കീഴിലാണ്. ചെറുതായിട്ടും ചരിത്രപരമായി വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. വർഷംതോറും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പത്ത് ദിവസത്തെ തോറ്റംപാട്ട് മഹോത്സവം ഭക്തർക്ക് ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ വേദിയൊരുക്കുന്നു.
മഹോത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടക്കുന്ന പൊങ്കാല സമർപ്പണത്തിന് നാടിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള നിരവധി ഭക്തർ ക്ഷേത്രസന്നിധിയിൽ എത്തുന്നു. തോറ്റംപാട്ട് ഭദ്രകാളിക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ പ്രധാനമായ ഒരു അനുഷ്ഠാനമാണ്. ഇതിൽ തെയ്യങ്ങൾ, വടക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെ തെയ്യാട്ടവും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. തലേന്നാൾ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യം, വെള്ളാട്ടം തുടങ്ങിയ അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗമായ പാട്ടുകളാണ് തോറ്റംപാട്ട്. "തോറ്റം" എന്ന പദത്തിന് സ്തോത്രം (സ്തുതി) എന്ന അർത്ഥമുണ്ട്. വണ്ണാൻ, മലയൻ, അഞ്ഞൂറ്റാൻ, മുന്നൂറ്റാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ സമുദായങ്ങൾ ഈ പാട്ടുകൾ പാടുന്നതും അനുഷ്ഠാനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. തെയ്യാട്ടത്തിന്റെ ആദിഘട്ടമായി തോറ്റംപാട്ട് ദൈവത്തെ വിളിച്ചു വരുത്താനും, ദൈവചരിത്രം വർണ്ണിക്കാനും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
