Padanayarkulangara Mahadeva Temple is a historic shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, situated in the town of Karunagappally within the Kollam District.
The temple is one of the 108 renowned Shiva temples located in Kerala. Numerous legends surround the Karunagappally Padaanayarkulangara Mahadeva Temple. A notable tale suggests that Shiva and Krishna traversed this area during their journey. Exhausted from their travels, they arrived at what is now Karunagappally, which was once a dense forest. Lord Krishna was tasked with locating an ideal resting place. He discovered the site and chose to settle there, captivated by its beauty. Meanwhile, Mahadevan, who had been waiting for an extended period, was eventually sent to search for Krishna.
After a thorough search, Lord Shiva found Krishna seated in this picturesque location and desired to join him. Historically, Karunagappally was part of the Ayi dynasty before becoming associated with Odanad and subsequently Travancore. For a period, it served as the administrative center for the Kayamkulam kings. The Pattanayarkulangara Temple, originally a Buddhist temple, was later transformed into a Hindu place of worship. Many locations in Kerala, previously referred to as Palli, were once Buddhist shrines or monasteries. A statue of Buddha, dating back to the 9th century, was unearthed from Marathurkulangara in the Taluk.
പടനായർകുളങ്ങര മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിലെ കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി പട്ടണത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പടനായർകുളങ്ങര മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ചുവെന്ന ഐതിഹ്യം ഉള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി ടൗണിൽ ദേശീയപാതയോരത്ത് ശാസ്താംകോട്ട റോഡിന്റെ നേരെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. പുരാതന കേരളത്തിലെ 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം, തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാണു. കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി ടൗണിൽ ദേശീയപാത-47 ന്റെ കിഴക്കുവശത്താണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം, കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി ബസ് സ്റ്റാൻഡിൽ നിന്നും 200 മീറ്റർ മാത്രം അകലെയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം.
കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി പടനായർകുളങ്ങര മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് നിരവധി ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. അവയിൽ പ്രധാനമായത് ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു; ശ്രീപരമശിവനും, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണ പരമാത്മാവും ഒരിക്കൽ യാത്രക്കാരായി ഈ വഴിയിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോയി. അവർ നടന്നു തളർന്ന് പഴയ കാടിൽ വിശ്രമിക്കാൻ ഈ കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളിയിൽ എത്തി. ശ്രീപരമശിവൻക്ക് താമസിക്കാൻ അനുയോജ്യമായ സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്താൻ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനെ അയച്ചുവത്രേ. ഭഗവാൻ കൃഷ്ണൻ സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്തിയെങ്കിലും, അവിടെ സ്ഥലം കാണുന്ന സൗന്ദര്യത്തിൽ ആകർഷിതനായി അവിടെ തന്നെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ശ്രീമഹാദേവൻ ഏറെ നേരം കാത്തിരുന്ന ശേഷം, സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്താൻ പറഞ്ഞവൻ സ്വയം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതമായത് അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ, അദ്ദേഹം കൂടാതെ വൈകാതെ തന്നെ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനൊപ്പം സ്ഥാനം ഉറപ്പിച്ചു.
ശ്രീപരമശിവന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയും ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയും ഒരേ നാലമ്പലത്തിൽ ആണ്. കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി ആദ്യമായി ഒരു രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു, പിന്നീട് അത് ഓടനാടിന്റെ ഭാഗമായും, പിന്നീട് തിരുവിതാംകൂരിന്റെ ഭാഗമായും നിലനിന്നു. കായംകുളം രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം കുറച്ചുകാലം കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളിയിലായിരുന്നു. ആ കാലത്ത് ബുദ്ധക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്ന പടനായർകുളങ്ങരക്ഷേത്രം ഹിന്ദുക്ഷേത്രമായി മാറ്റിയിരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ പള്ളി എന്ന പേരുള്ള നിരവധി സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ മുമ്പ് ബുദ്ധദേവാലങ്ങളോ അവയുടെ വിഹാരകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളോ ആയിരുന്നു. 9-ാം ശതകത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് ആകുന്ന ബുദ്ധവിഗ്രഹം താലൂക്കിലെ മരതൂർകുളങ്ങരയിൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, ഇത് ഈ വിശ്വാസത്തെ ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഇവിടെ നിത്യേന അഞ്ചുപൂജകൾ പടിത്തരമായി നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു, കൂടാതെ മൂന്നുശീവേലിയും നിത്യേന നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
