Poredam Mahadevar Temple is situated in Poredam, close to Chatayamangalam, within the Kollam district. This temple is devoted to Mahadev.
Poredam Sri Mahadevar Temple is an ancient and historically significant temple dedicated to Sri Mahadev, the Lord of the Universe. According to the Ramayana, this is the place where Jatayu, the great bird, encountered the demon king Ravana as he was flying to Lanka on the Pushpak Vimana (a flying chariot) after abducting Sita, Lord Rama's wife. Hearing Sita's cries for help, Jatayu fought with Ravana in an attempt to rescue her. However, during the fierce battle, Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings, causing the bird to fall.
The battle is believed to have occurred at Poredom, and the name "Poredom" is said to have been derived from this fight. Nearby, Chadayamangalam, once called Jatayumangalam, is thought to be where Jatayu finally fell after losing to Ravana. The Poredam temple is not only ancient but also considered a powerful spiritual center in the region. Built following Kerala’s traditional temple vastu shastra, the temple features a kodimaram (flagstaff), chuttambalam (outer structure), namaskara mandapam (prayer hall), shrines of upa devatas (sub-deities), a large temple pond, and a chathura sreekovil (the main sanctum). Bhagavathy and Ganapathi are the prominent upa devatas worshipped here.
The temple's annual Avittam Thirunal festival, celebrated in the month of Medam (April – May), is a major attraction. This festival is renowned for its ezhunnallathu (processions), caparisoned elephants, traditional temple art forms, and melam (percussion music). The festival includes various Shaiva tantric rituals such as kalasham, dhara, and homam. In addition to Avittam Thirunal, the temple also observes Pongala, Mahashivratri, and Pradosham vratam with special pujas and ceremonies. The administration of the temple is overseen by the Travancore Devaswam Board.

കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ചടയമംഗലത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള പോരേടത്തിലാണ് ശ്രീമഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സർവ്വഭൂതസംഹാരിയായ മഹാദേവനു സമർപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്, പ്രപഞ്ചേശ്വരനായ മഹാദേവൻ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്കായി ആശ്രയവും ഐശ്വര്യവും നൽകുന്ന ദൈവമായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. രാമായണത്തിലെ സംഭവപ്രകാരം, രാക്ഷസരാജാവ് രാവണൻ ശ്രീരാമന്റെ ഭാര്യ സീതയെ തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകുമ്പോൾ പുഷ്പകവിമാനത്തിൽ ലങ്കയിലേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയ്തുനിൽക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. സീതയുടെ നിലവിളി കേട്ടപ്പോൾ, പക്ഷി രാജാവായ ജടായു രാവണനുമായി പോരാട്ടത്തിലേർപ്പെട്ടു.
യുദ്ധത്തിനിടയിൽ, രാവണൻ ജടായുവിന്റെ ചിറകുകൾ മുറിച്ചു. ഈ സംഭവത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയാണു 'പോരേടം' എന്ന സ്ഥലം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. തിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, ചടയമംഗലം, ഒരു കാലത്ത് ജടായുമംഗലം എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു, അവിടെകൂടിയാണ് ജടായു വീണത്. പോരേടം മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രാചീനവും ശക്തിയേറിയതുമായ ദൈവികസ്ഥാനമാണ്. കേരള ക്ഷേത്ര വാസ്തുശാസ്ത്രം അനുസരിച്ചാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഘടകങ്ങളിൽ കൊടിമരം, ചുറ്റമ്പലം, നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപം, ഉപദേവതകളുടെ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ, വിശാലമായ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം, ചതുരശ്രീകോവിൽ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകളായി ഭഗവതി, ഗണപതി എന്നിവരുടെ ആരാധനയും നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം അവിട്ടം തിരുനാൾ ഉത്സവമാണ്, ഇത് മേടമാസത്തിൽ (ഏപ്രിൽ – മെയ്) ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ എഴുന്നള്ളത്ത്, സാംപ്രദായിക കലാരൂപങ്ങൾ, ആനകളുടെ സദസ്സ്, മേളം തുടങ്ങിയവ വലിയ ആകർഷണങ്ങളാണ്. ശൈവ താന്ത്രിക പൂജകൾ, കലശം, ധാര, ഹോമം എന്നിവയും ഉത്സവത്തിന്റ ഭാഗമാക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ, പൊങ്കാല, മഹാശിവരാത്രി, പ്രദോഷ വ്രതം എന്നിവയും ഇവിടെ ആചരിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണപരിപാലനം തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ കീഴിലാണ്.
