ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പട്ടാളത്തിന്റെ അധിനിവേശ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ശതാബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ പാരമ്പര്യം ഉണ്ട്. പരമഹംസ സന്ന്യാസികളിൽ ഒരാൾ ഉഗ്രമൂർത്തിയായ കാളിയെ തപസു ചെയ്ത് പ്രത്യഷപെടുത്തുകയും ആ ചൈതന്യധാര വലയം പ്രാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതിന്റെ ഐതീഹ്യം വളരെ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. എന്നാൽ, കാലക്രമത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് അനാഥത്വം സംഭവിക്കുകയും, തുടർന്ന് ക്ഷേത്ര ദേശക്കാരായ ഭക്തന്മാർ ചേർന്ന് ക്ഷേത്ര ഭരണം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും ഒരു ക്ഷേത്ര സംരക്ഷണപൗരസമിതിയെ രൂപീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാൽ, ഈ സമിതിക്ക് കാലത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റങ്ങൾക്കനുസരിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രം നവീകരിക്കുന്നതിലും കാര്യക്ഷമതയോടെ ക്ഷേത്ര കാര്യങ്ങൾ മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിലും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നു.
ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, കൊല്ലത്തെ ഹൈന്ദവപ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ പ്രധാന പ്രവർത്തകരെ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി സംരക്ഷണപൗരസമിതി പുന:സംഘടിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, 1990 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 1-ന് ക്ഷേത്ര ഭരണം കൈമാറുകയും പുതിയ സമിതി നിലവിൽ വരുകയും ചെയ്തു. അന്നത്തെ ദേവപ്രശ്നത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്ര പുനർനിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത രണ്ട് ഉത്സവങ്ങളാണ്. പൊങ്കാല ഉത്സവവും തിരു ആറാട്ട് ഉത്സവവും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷങ്ങളായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ അവസാന വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയാണ് വാർഷിക പൊങ്കാല. ഇതിന് മുമ്പായി 12 ദിവസങ്ങളോളം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന ദ്വാദശഹവതത്തോടു കൂടിയ പൊങ്കാല മഹോത്സവം, മഞ്ഞനീരാട്ട്, പാൽക്കുടം എഴുന്നള്ളത്ത്, സമൂഹ സാരസ്വത യജ്ഞം, ഗോമാതാ പൂജ തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മീനമാസത്തിലെ മകം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ തിരു ആറാട്ട് വരത്തക്കവിധത്തിൽ 8 ദിവസത്തെ തിരുആറാട്ട് മഹോത്സവം ആചരിക്കുന്നു.
