The Puthoor Kaniyapoika Sree Bhagavathi Temple, located in Kollam district, encompasses three areas: Puthoor, Attuvassery, and Mylamkulam. Alongside the main deity, the temple also has sub-deities, including Ganapathi, Nagas, and Shastha. The peaceful atmosphere of the temple offers mental peace and harmony to devotees.
The origin of this temple is deeply connected with the Mahabharata, one of India's greatest epics. Devi is worshiped here in three distinct forms throughout the day. In the morning, she is worshiped as Vidya Durga (Saraswati), who bestows knowledge and success in careers. In the afternoon, she takes the form of Vanadurga (Durga), also known as Twaritha Devi, blessing devotees with health, early marriages, and domestic harmony. By evening, she is revered as Aadi Durga (Mooladurga-Lakshmi), showering her blessings of wealth and prosperity upon her devotees.
The main annual festival of the temple is celebrated on the Bharani day in the Malayalam month of Meenam. Here, Goddess Devi is worshiped in the form of Bhadrakali, who protects all living beings by destroying evil forces. Known as Kaniyapoikamma, she stands as the guardian deity, protecting and blessing all who seek her grace.
