Shri Dharma Sastha temple is a Hindu place of worship situated in the village of Sasthamkotta, Kerala, India. This temple is bordered on three sides by Sasthamkotta Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Kerala.
The temple in this location is renowned for its population of monkeys, which are thought to be the divine attendants of the principal deity. The Sasthamcotta temple is one of the five historic Sastha temples situated in Kerala, alongside AchanKoil, Aryankavu, Kulathupuzha, and Sabarimala. The idea of Dharma Sastha embodies the harmonious integration of Vaishnava and Saiva traditions. The history of this temple extends beyond the era of the Ramayana (Treta Yuga).
It is said that Shri Rama, accompanied by his wife Sita, his brother Lakshmana, and the entire vaanara army, visited Sasthamcotta on their return to Ayodhya following their triumph over Ravana. They came to pay homage to Shri Dharma Sastha. At the banks of Sasthamcotta Lake, which is thought to possess water akin to the Surya Raga Theertha of Manasa Sarovar, Shri Rama performed pithru tharpan. Subsequently, he appointed Neelan, the chief architect of his vanara team, to host them. Neelan is regarded as the ancestor of the current monkey clan associated with this temple.
The utsavam extends over a period of ten days. The inaugural day features the hoisting of the flag, signaling the commencement of the festivities. The event reaches its peak with the ‘araattu’ ceremony on ‘Utram’ during the month of Kumbham (February–March). On the tenth day, the ‘Kettukazhcha’ takes place, showcasing a procession that includes various effigies of bullocks, horses, and ornately decorated chariots. Additionally, numerous elephants adorned with their nettipattam arrive at the temple to pay homage to the principal deity, who is seated on a richly adorned elephant in the temple courtyard, accompanied by many other embellished elephants.

ശാസ്താംകോട്ട ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിലെ കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ കുന്നത്തൂർ താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പ്രശസ്ത ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മൂന്നുഭാഗത്തും കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ശുദ്ധജലത്തടാകമായ ശാസ്താംകോട്ട കായൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അവിടെ താമസിക്കുന്ന വാനരന്മാർക്കു പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന്റെ സേവകരായാണ് ഈ വാനരന്മാരെ കരുതുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രാചീനമായ അഞ്ചു ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായാണ് ശാസ്താംകോട്ട ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. മറ്റ് നാലു ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ, അച്ചൻകോവിൽ ശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം, ആര്യങ്കാവ് ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം, കുളത്തൂപ്പുഴ ശ്രീധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം, ശബരിമല ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം എന്നിവയാണ്. ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന്റെ ഭാര്യയായ പ്രഭാദേവിയോടും, മകനായ സത്യകനോടും കൂടിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം വസിക്കുന്നത്.
ത്രേതായുഗത്തിനപ്പുറത്തുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യകഥകൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീരാമൻ തന്റെ ഭാര്യ സീതയോടും സഹോദരൻ ലക്ഷ്മണനോടും കൂടി രാവണനെ കീഴടക്കിയ ശേഷം, ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവിനെ കണ്ടു വണങ്ങിയെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. 'ശാസ്താംകോട്ട' എന്ന പേരിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഒരു പത്ത് ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവമാണ് ഇത്. ആദ്യദിനം കൊടിയേറ്റ് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ഉത്രം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ ആറാട്ട് നടക്കുന്നത് മാർച്ച് മാസത്തിൽ ആണ്. പത്താം ദിവസത്തിൽ കെട്ടുകാഴ്ച്ച നടക്കും. ഈ ദിനം വിവിധതരം കുതിരകളും കാളകളും രൂപം കൊണ്ടു പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഓരോ രൂപവും ഭീമാകാരമാണ്. ഇവയെ വലിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നടക്കും. നെറ്റിപ്പട്ടം കെട്ടിയ ഗജവീരന്മാരും ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാകും.
