Sree Uma Maheswara Temple, located in the center of Kollam town, is unique in Kerala for its northward orientation, featuring Lord Shiva in his married form as the principal deity.
This ancient temple, which has stood for a century, is unique in that it features both Lord Shiva and Parvati on the same pedestal. At the entrance, one can find sub-deities including Ganapati, Sree Murugan, and Nandikesan. The guardian of the temple, known as Madan Thampuran, ensures the safety of all devotees. The Lord is known for His easy disposition. From the summit of Mount Kailasa, Uma Maheswara journeyed to Agastya Mountain in the north, traversing dense forests, hills, and streams, ultimately arriving in the historic city of Kollam. Upon witnessing the city's splendid gardens, palaces, and royal highways, the Lord remarked to Devi that "a visitor to Kollam will abandon his home".
Enchanted by the locale, Devi expressed a desire to spend the night there. They chose to rest beneath a banyan tree located in the heart of the town. Close to this banyan tree, where Lord Shiva and Parvati took their respite, resided numerous skilled artisans proficient in various arts, architecture, and sculpture. Among them was Venkiteswaran, a master craftsman, who experienced a dream instructing him to build a temple for Uma Maheswaran at that very site. When Shree Parameswar is united with Goddess Parvati, the atmosphere becomes profoundly sacred, granting devotees all that they seek in prayer. Goddess Parvati, revered as the mother goddess, offers comfort to her followers. For Uma Maheswara, distinctions of caste and creed among devotees are inconsequential. During the reign of kings, they sought the blessings of Uma Maheswara for prosperity, longevity, and divine favor.
Through the rituals of Swayamvara Archana, Iswarya Pooja, Uma Maheswara Pooja, and Ganapathi Homam, individuals can address issues within their horoscopes and overcome challenges in securing favorable matrimonial alliances. To resolve misunderstandings between couples, the Samvada Sooktha Manthra Pushpanjali is conducted, effectively addressing all related concerns. Couples who are childless may find fulfillment through the Pooja Santhana Gopala Pushpanjali performed on Pournami day, which is believed to bless them with children. Numerous individuals have experienced positive outcomes from the Poojas and offerings conducted at this temple. Each year, Akshaya Thritheeya is celebrated at this location, recognized as the most auspicious day at the Uma Maheswara temple in Kollam. It is traditionally regarded as the wedding anniversary of Kollam Sree Uma Maheswara Swami. On this day, devotees can acquire silver and gold coins, which are thought to bring prosperity. Additionally, sacred pooja rituals are performed. Another significant festival at this temple is Pongaala, which attracts participants from across the state. Important offerings such as Manjal Para and Ellupara are made during the Thiruvathira star in the month of Dhanu. Throughout the Mandala season, Chirappu rituals are conducted continuously for 61 days. On Sivarathry, fasting is observed, and Kumbhabishekam is performed annually on the Thiruvathira and Punartham stars of Edavam.
ശ്രീ ഉമാ മഹേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം
ശ്രീ ഉമാമഹേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം, കൊല്ലം പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്, ഇവിടെ കൈലാസനാഥൻ (പരമശിവൻ) പ്രധാന ദേവനായി വിവാഹിതനാണ്. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി നിലനിന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ശിവനും പാർവതിയും ഒരുമിച്ച് ഒരേ പീഠത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയുള്ളതാണ്. കൊല്ലം KSRTC ബസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് 4 മിനിറ്റിനുള്ളിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്താൻ സാധിക്കും. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന കവാടം ഹൈവേയ്ക്ക് അടുത്താണ്. പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തിൽ ഗണപതി, ശ്രീമുരുകൻ, നന്ദികേശൻ എന്നിവരെ ഉപദേവന്മാരായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഭഗവാൻറെ സംരക്ഷകനായ 'മാടൻ തമ്പുരാൻ' ഭക്തരെ എല്ലാ അപകടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. ഭഗവാൻ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ പ്രസാദിക്കുന്നവനാണ്, കൈലാസ പർവതത്തിന്റെ കൊടുമുടിയിൽ നിന്ന് നിബിഡ വനങ്ങളും കുന്നുകളും അരുവികളും കടന്നുപോകുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന കവാടം ഹൈവേയ്ക്ക് അടുത്താണ്. പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തിൽ ഗണപതി, ശ്രീമുരുകൻ, നന്ദികേശൻ എന്നിവരെ ഉപദേവന്മാരായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഭഗവന്റെ സംരക്ഷകനായ 'മാടൻ തമ്പുരാൻ' എല്ലാ അപകടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഭക്തരെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. ഭഗവൻ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. സ്വയംവര അർച്ചന, ഐശ്വര്യപൂജ, ഉമാമഹേശ്വര പൂജ, ഗണപതിഹോമം എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ജാതകത്തിലെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും നല്ല കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിന് തടസ്സമായ കാര്യങ്ങളും പരിഹരിക്കാം. ദമ്പതികൾക്കിടയിലെ തെറ്റിദ്ധാരണകൾക്ക് സംവാദ സൂക്തമന്ത്ര പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലി നടത്തുന്നത് സഹായകമാണ്, ഇത് എല്ലാ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും പരിഹരിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. കുട്ടികളില്ലാത്ത ദമ്പതികൾ പൗർണമി നാളിൽ പൂജ നടത്തുകയാണെങ്കിൽ, സന്താന ഗോപാല പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലി നടത്തുന്നത് വഴി സന്താനലബ്ധി നേടാൻ കഴിയും. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പൂജകളും വഴിപാടുകളും വഴി നിരവധി പേർ പ്രയോജനം നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഇവിടെ അക്ഷയതൃതീയ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. കൊല്ലത്തെ ഉമാമഹേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പുണ്യകരമായ ദിവസമായാണ് ‘അക്ഷയ തൃതീയ’ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്.
കൊല്ലം ശ്രീ ഉമാ മഹേശ്വര സ്വാമിയുടെ വിവാഹദിനമാണിതെന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അന്നാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വെള്ളി, സ്വർണ നാണയങ്ങൾ ലഭിക്കുന്നത്.ഈ നാണയങ്ങൾ കൈവശം വയ്ക്കുന്നത് സമൃദ്ധി കൊണ്ടുവരുമെന്ന് ഭക്തർ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. വിശുദ്ധ ദിവ്യപൂജയും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം പൊങ്കാലയാണ്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആളുകൾ ഈ വഴിപാടിൽ പങ്കുചേരുന്നു. ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ മഞ്ഞൾ പറ, എള്ളുപ്പാറ തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റ് പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകൾ. മണ്ഡലകാലത്ത് 61 ദിവസം തുടർച്ചയായി ചിറപ്പ് നടത്താറുണ്ട്. ശിവരാത്രി ദിനത്തിൽ ശിവരാത്രി വ്രതാനുഷ്ഠാനവും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇടവത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര, പുണർതം നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളിൽ എല്ലാ വർഷവും പതിവായി കുംഭാഭിഷേകം നടത്താറുണ്ട്.
