Kalayapuram is a village situated on either side of the MC road in Kottarakkara, within the Kollam district. This village is renowned for being the location of the esteemed Thalikal Mahadeva Temple.
It is claimed that no other temple in Kerala features a Shivalinga as large as that found in Thalikal Temple. This remarkable structure is estimated to stand at 14 feet in height, with a circumference of 5 feet and extending 22 feet underground. The presence of such an enormous Shiva linga suggests that a significant Shiva temple once existed at this location in Thalikkal.
The temple's pool spans approximately three acres, leading to the belief that the temple itself must be of a corresponding size. Remarkably, despite the passage of many years, the Shivalinga remains free from mold, which is attributed to its composition of Krishna stone sourced from Tamil Nadu. Surrounding the Shivalinga, numerous small idols can be observed, believed to have been collected from nearby farms and offered by local residents seeking protection from malevolent forces. An examination conducted by the archaeology department revealed that the temple dates back around two thousand years, and further investigations indicated that it was part of a town covering 60 acres. Currently, this temple is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
തളിയ്ക്കൽ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കൊട്ടാരക്കര എം.സി. റോഡിന്റെ ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രാമമാണ് കലയപുരം. ഇവിടെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തളിക്കൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ചരിത്രപരമായി വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള ഈ ഗ്രാമം, മൺമറഞ്ഞ ഒരു പുരാതന സംസ്കാരവും പട്ടണവാസവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. തളിക്കൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശിവലിംഗം കേരളത്തിലെ മറ്റ് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ കാണാനാകാത്ത വലിപ്പമുള്ളതാണ്. 14 അടി ഉയരവും 5 അടി ചുറ്റളവുമുള്ള ഈ ശിവലിംഗം, മുകളിലേക്കും 22 അടിയോളം ഭൂമിക്കടിയിലും സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ഇത്ര വലിയ ശിവലിംഗം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ, ഒരു കാലത്ത് കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് നമുക്ക് കരുതാം. തളിക്കൽ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം ഏകദേശം മൂന്നേക്കറോളം വിസ്തീർണ്ണമുള്ള ഒരു വലിയ കുളമാണ്, ഇത് തളിക്കൽ ചിറ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത്ര വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ, അതിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുമെന്നാണ് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. വർഷങ്ങളോളം നിലനിന്നിട്ടും ശിവലിംഗത്തിന് പൂപ്പൽ കാണാനില്ല. കാരണം, ഇത് തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കൃഷ്ണശിലയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ചതാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
ഈ ശിവലിംഗത്തിന് ചുറ്റും ധാരാളം ചെറു വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവയെല്ലാം സമീപത്തെ പുരയിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്, തദ്ദേശവാസികൾ ദോഷത്തെ ഭയന്ന് ഇവ ഇവിടെ സമർപ്പിച്ചതാണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ആർക്കിയോളജി വകുപ്പുകൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പരിശോധിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ഇത് രണ്ടായിരം വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണെന്നും, തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള പരിശോധനയിൽ 60 ഏക്കറോളം വ്യാപിച്ച ഒരു പട്ടണമായിരുന്നു എന്നും കണ്ടെത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇപ്പോൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവിതാങ്കൂർ ദേവസ്വത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാണ്.
