Valiyakulangara is a village situated to the south of Ochira, within the Karunagappalli taluk of the Kollam district. In the temple, both Bhadrakali and Durga Devi are revered with equal significance at their respective shrines.
Only one festival, known as 'Meena Bharani,' was originally celebrated at the temple as its annual event. Subsequently, the 'Karakkar' community decided to also observe Kumbhabharani during the Karthika Nakshatra in the month of Kumbham. Presently, Kumbha Bharani is celebrated under the auspices of Thekkekkara, while Meena Bharani is conducted by Vadakkekkara.
The Meena Bharani festival was marked by vibrant celebrations until the early 1900s, featuring 'Eduppukhira' structures that reached heights of 40 to 60 feet. On the festival day, artisans employed a unique type of vehicle for the 'Garudan Thookkam' ritual. The Uraima 'Thookkam' was introduced by an individual named Uralan, who was associated with the Namboothiri community. Following this, various Thookkam forms were developed for other families within the region. However, the creation of Eduppukuthirakal and Garuda weights was eventually discontinued for reasons that remain unclear. Currently, it is estimated that 'Eduppukuthirakal' used in the Devi procession stand at a height of 105 feet.
വലിയകുളങ്ങര ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി താലൂക്കിന്റെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രാമമാണ് വലിയകുളങ്ങര. ഇവിടെ പുരാതനമായ വലിയകുളങ്ങര ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭദ്രകാളിക്കും, ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവിക്കും തുല്യപ്രാധാന്യമാണ്‌ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കൊല്ലവർഷത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമായ 'മീന ഭരണി' എന്ന ഉത്സവം മാത്രമേ ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിൽ നടന്നിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. പിന്നീട്, കുംഭത്തിലെ കാർത്തിക നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ കുംഭഭരണി ആഘോഷിക്കാൻ 'കരക്കാർ' തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോൾ, തെക്കേ കരക്കാരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ കുംഭഭരണിയും വടക്കേ കരക്കാരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ മീന ഭരണിയും ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
AD 1900-ന്റെ ആരംഭം വരെ 40 മുതൽ 60 അടി വരെ ഉയരമുള്ള 'എടുപ്പുകുതിരകൾ' അണിനിരന്ന്, മീന ഭരണി ആഘോഷം വളരെ വർണ്ണാഭമായ രീതിയിൽ നടത്തപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ഉത്സവദിവസത്തിൽ 'ഗരുഡൻ തൂക്കം' നടത്താൻ കരക്കാർ പ്രത്യേകതയുള്ള വാഹനങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു. തോട്ടത്തിൽ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ പേരിൽ ഊരാളൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ ഊരയ്മ തൂക്കം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. അതിനുശേഷം 'കര'യിലെ മറ്റ് കുടുംബങ്ങൾക്കായി നിരവധി തൂക്കങ്ങൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. പിന്നീട് എടുപ്പ് കുതിരകളുടെയും ഗരുഡൻ തൂക്കത്തിൻറെയും നിർമ്മാണം അജ്ഞാതമായ കാരണങ്ങളാൽ നിർത്തിവെക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഇപ്പോൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കെട്ടുകാഴ്ചക്ക് 105 അടിയോളം ഉയരമുള്ള എടുപ്പ് കുതിരകളാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
