Vettikkavala Sree Mahadevar Temple, commonly referred to as Vettikavala Mahakshetrangal, is situated in Vettikkavala, close to Kottarakkara in the Kollam district.
There are two temples located in this area: Meloottu Kshetram, where Mahadevan is the principal deity, and Keezhoottu Kshetram, dedicated to Mahavishnu as the main deity. Mahadevan is revered in a circular sanctum, known as a vatta sreekovil, while Mahavishnu is honored in a square sanctum, referred to as a chatura sreekovil. Both temples are oriented towards the east, and there are two flagpoles situated within the temple premises. The deities venerated in the temple include Ganapathy, Nagam, Kazhuvudayan, Vasoorimala, Bhoothathan, Kochu Moorti, and Vathukkal Njali Kunju.
According to local folklore, the Shivlingam was inadvertently uncovered by a woman from the hunter community while she was searching for native tubers. During her digging, she struck a Shivling located beneath a Vetti maram tree, which resulted in blood emerging from the Shivling, leading to the establishment of the temple at that site. The annual festival, lasting ten days, concludes with the arattu ceremony on the Thiruvathira nakshatra in the month of Kumbham (February – March).
The temple celebrates the Ashtami Rohini festival and Ashtami during the month of Vrischika. The Ashtami darshanam in Vrischika is considered to be particularly auspicious. Additionally, the shrine hosts the Pongala ritual in the month of Thulam, referred to as Paal Pongala. The Vathilkal Njali Kunju goddess, recognized as the Upa Devata of the temple, enjoys significant popularity. Offerings to this deity include black bangles, bananas, oil, miniature cradles, and milk. These offerings are made with the intention of facilitating swift recovery from ailments affecting children and promoting childbirth within the family.

ധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താവ്, കന്നിമൂല ഗണപതി, കാവുടയാന്‍, യോഗീശ്വരന്‍, യക്ഷിയമ്മ, അറുകൊല, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ് ശ്രീഭൂതത്താന്‍, മസൂരിമാടന്‍, അപ്പൂപ്പന്‍, നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി എന്നിവരുടെ ഉപദേവാലയങ്ങളും കൂത്തമ്പലവും കളത്തട്ടും, ആല്‍ത്തറയും ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് ആനന്ദവും ശാന്തിയും നൽകുന്നു. അതിനാൽ, ഇവിടെ ഭജനമുണ്ടാകുന്നത് മാനസിക വിഭ്രാന്തി പോലുള്ള രോഗങ്ങള്‍ മാറ്റുന്നതിനും ആളുകള്‍ എത്തുന്നു. മേലൂട്ട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപപ്രതിഷ്ഠകളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടത് വാതുക്കല്‍ ഞാലിക്കുഞ്ഞാണ്. കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളില്ലാത്ത ദമ്പതികള്‍ക്ക് സല്‍സന്താനഭാഗ്യത്തിനും ശിശുക്കളുടെ ബാലാരിഷ്ടതകള്‍ മാറ്റുന്നതിനും വാതുക്കല്‍ ഞാലിക്കുഞ്ഞിന് കരിവളയും പാലും പഴവും മറ്റ് വഴിപാടുകളും ഭക്തര്‍ സമര്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരു വേട സ്ത്രീ കിഴങ്ങു പറിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ വെട്ടിമരച്ചോട്ടിലിരുന്ന ലിംഗത്തില്‍ ചോര പൊടിഞ്ഞ് ശിവചൈതന്യം കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി പറയുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഇവിടെ ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും, ഇരണൂര്‍ദേവി നവരാത്രി കാലത്ത് ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നുവെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ഈ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ് നവരാത്രി ഉത്സവം നടത്തുന്നത്, വെട്ടിക്കവല അഷ്ടമി മഹോത്സവം പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. തിരുവഷ്ടമിയുടെ തലേദിവസം നടക്കുന്ന പാല്‍പൊങ്കാലയ്ക്ക് അഭൂതപൂര്‍വമായ ഭക്തജനത്തിരക്കുണ്ട്. പുതിയ കലയില്‍ പാല്‍ തിളപ്പിച്ച് പഴവും പഞ്ചസാരയും ചേര്‍ത്ത് പൊങ്കാല ഒരുക്കുന്നു.
