Approximately 13 kilometers to the northeast of Kottayam town lies the picturesque village of Amayannoor, which is enveloped by azure hills, tranquil lakes, flowing streams, and lush plantations. This village is home to the renowned Amayannoor Sree Mahadeva Temple.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known as Mahadevar. Within the shrine, there is also a murti of Veerabhadra. A notable feature of the temple is the presence of four Shivlings arranged in a straight line within the temple complex. The annual festival, which lasts for ten days, takes place during the Malayalam month of Kumbha Masam (February – March). According to local tradition, a sage on a pilgrimage visited this site thousands of years ago and recognized the divine presence of Shiva.
He meditated in this location, and it is believed that Shiva granted him darshan at several spots. The Shivlings were consecrated by the sage at the locations where he experienced the divine vision of Shiva. The temple features a vatta sreekovil characterized by a three-tiered roof. The deities honored within the temple include Ganapathi, Ayyappa, Dakshinamurti, Goddess Bhagavati, Nagas, and Veerabhadra. A large pond is situated in front of the temple. The shrine comprises a chuttambalam, a namaskara mandapam, and a dwajasthambam.
Five Shivlings are venerated in the temple, leading to the belief that a visit here is equivalent to a pilgrimage to Kashi. The Sankalpam of Shiva worshipped in this temple represents Shiva heard about Sati's demise at the Daksha Yaga, embodying both anger and sorrow. Shivratri holds considerable importance as a festival within the temple. Additionally, Pradosham and Mondays are regarded as highly significant occasions in the temple's calendar. The observances of Thrikarthika and Thiruvathira also take place within the temple.
