Bharananganam Sree Krishna Swami Temple is situated along the banks of the Meenachil River, approximately 5 kilometers east of Pala in the Kottayam district. This location is often referred to as Dakshina Guruvayoor, or the Guruvayoor of the South, due to the presence of the Sree Krishna Swami Temple.
During their period of exile, the Pandavas and Panchali resided in this location for several days. During this time, Yudhishtira conducted a worship ceremony dedicated to Lord Vishnu. He resolved to perform the Dwadasi Pooja on the Dwadasi day of the Shukla Paksha in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. However, he lacked idols of Lord Krishna for the worship.
Recognizing the plight of His devotee, Lord Krishna instructed Vedavyasa Muni and Narada Muni to provide a beautiful idol of Lord Vishnu to Yudhishtira. The two sages traveled to the banks of the sacred Gauna river (now known as Meenachil), where they established the idol of Lord Vishnu in an appropriate location and conducted the Vishnu pooja on behalf of Yudhishtira.
Annual festival lasting eight days in Makaram (January) is a lively celebration throughout the region, beginning with the raising of the temple flag on Makara Samkramam day and culminating in the 'Arattu' (Ritual Bath of the deity) on the eighth day. This eight-day utsavam of the temple is observed during the month of Makaram, featuring events such as Kodiyettu, Pallivetta, and Arattu.

ഭരണങ്ങാനം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ പാലായിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം അഞ്ച് കിലോമീറ്റർ, ഭരണങ്ങാനം കവലയിൽ നിന്നും 1.2 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ്. ദ്വാപരയുഗത്തിൽ ധർമ്മപുത്രർ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കൃഷ്ണാജ്ഞന ശിലയിൽ ഉള്ള ചതുർബാഹുവിഗ്രഹം അത്യന്തം അപൂർവ്വവും പ്രത്യേകതയുള്ളതുമാണ്.
സമാനമായ വിഗ്രഹം ഗുരുവായൂരിൽ മാത്രമേ കാണപ്പെടുന്നുള്ളൂ. മൂന്നു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്കുമുമ്പുള്ള നിഴൽ വീഴാത്ത ആൽവിളക്കും, ബലിക്കൽപ്പുരയുടെ മേൽത്തട്ടിലുള്ള അഷ്ടദിക്പാലകൻമാരുടെ ദാരുശിൽപ്പങ്ങളും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചൈതന്യത്തെ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ദ്വാപരയുഗത്തിൽ ഏകദേശം അയ്യായിരം വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ധർമ്മപുത്രർ ഏകാദശി വൃതമനുഷ്ടിച്ച് പാരണ വീട്ടിയ സ്ഥലമായതിനാൽ, ഈ പ്രദേശം 'പാരണംകാനം' എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ ഏകാദശി വൃതമനുഷ്ടിച്ച പാരണ വീട്ടിയ കാനനം ആയതിനാൽ, ഈ സ്ഥലം പ്രത്യേകമായ പ്രാധാന്യം വഹിക്കുന്നു. യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ ഏകാദശി വൃതം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്ന സമയമായിരുന്നു. ദ്വാദശി ദിനത്തിൽ പാരണ വീടുന്നതിനായി മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം കാണാത്തതുകൊണ്ടു വ്യാകുലമായ യുധിഷ്ഠിരന്റെ മുന്നിൽ നാരദമഹർഷി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അതിവിശിഷ്ടവും, അത്യപൂർവ്വവുമായ ഒരു ചതുർബാഹു വിഷ്ണു വിഗ്രഹം ബാദരായണ മഹർഷിയുടെ ആശ്രമത്തിൽ പൂജിക്കപ്പെടുകയാണെന്നും, യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടാൽ കൃഷ്ണാഞ്ജനശിലയിൽ നിർമ്മിതമായ ആ ദിവ്യ വിഗ്രഹം, കാരുണ്യവാനായ മഹർഷി ധർമ്മപുത്രർക്കു നൽകുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം അറിയിച്ചു.
വടവൃക്ഷത്തിനടിയിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു കാട്ടുതുളസി കമ്പൊടിച്ചു വിഗ്രഹം സ്ഥാപിക്കേണ്ട സ്ഥലവും നിർണ്ണയിച്ച് നന്മ ആശംസിച്ച് മഹർഷി അവിടെ നിന്നു മറഞ്ഞു. വനവാസകാലത്ത് പാണ്ഡവർ നിരവധി ബ്രാഹ്മണരെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെ കാലുകൾ കഴുകി, മദ്ധ്യാഹ്നഭോജനത്തിന് ശേഷം മാത്രമേ ധർമ്മപുത്രർ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചുള്ളൂ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ, ഇപ്പോഴും ഉച്ചപൂജയ്ക്ക് മുമ്പായി ബ്രാഹ്മണർക്ക് കാൽകഴുകി നമസ്ക്കാരമൂട്ട് നടത്തുന്നത് പതിവാണ്. ഇതിന് ശേഷം മാത്രമേ ഭഗവാനു നിവേദ്യവും ഉച്ചപൂജയും നടത്തപ്പെടുകയുള്ളൂ.
ഭരണങ്ങാനം ഇന്ന് ലോകപ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു കൃസ്ത്യൻ തീർത്ഥാടനകേന്ദ്രമായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിശുദ്ധ അൽഫോൻസയുടെ തിരുശരീരം ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പള്ളിയിൽ കാണാം. ആ കോമ്പൗണ്ടിൽ ഉള്ള സെൻറ് മേരീസ് പള്ളിയിൽ പുണ്യവാൻറെ തിരുസ്വരൂപവും ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനുമായി സഹോദരബന്ധം ഉണ്ടെന്ന വിശ്വാസം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. അതിനാൽ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ എഴുന്നള്ളത്തിലും പള്ളിയിലെ രൂപ പ്രദക്ഷിണത്തിലും നേരിട്ട് വരാൻ പാടില്ല.
ഭഗവാൻ ആറാട്ട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ, ആനപ്പുറത്ത് ചൂടുന്ന പട്ടുകുട പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് എത്തുന്നത്. അതുപോലെ, പള്ളിയിലെ പ്രദക്ഷിണം പുറത്തേക്കിറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും എത്തിക്കുന്ന കുത്തുവിളക്കിൻറെ അകമ്പടിയോടെയാണ് ഇത് നടക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് കാലാകാലങ്ങളായി തുടരുന്ന ഒരു ആചാരമാണ്.
