Chirakkadavu Mahadevar Temple is a Hindu place of worship situated in Chirakkadavu, Kottayam, Kerala. It is positioned along the Kollam-Theni route of National Highway 183, approximately 32 kilometers east of Akshra Nagari in Kottayam city and 3 kilometers south of Ponkunnam, on the way to Manimala and Erumely.
Chirakkadava Sri Mahadevar Temple is an ancient site, approximately 1000 years old, housing a 'Swayambhu Siva Lingam' that was discovered beneath a 'bilva Tree' (Aegle marmelos). It is believed that the temple was established during the era of the 'Alwars'. Additionally, there exists a temple tank from which the soil was excavated for the construction of the temple.
Devotees are able to cleanse their feet in the nearby streams prior to entering the temple. The presence of the pond, referred to as 'Chira' in Malayalam, located on the eastern side of the temple, has led to the area being named 'Chirakadavu'. The monarch responsible for the construction of the temple is reported to have established an 'ashram' in his final days, in proximity to the vilva tree.
It is said that he engaged in 'Tapas' at this location and earned the title of Kuwala (Bilwa) Maharshi. During his period of 'Tapas,' the Lord manifested in his dreams, and in accordance with his desires, the king persisted in his penance, ultimately believed to have ascended to a celestial realm. 'Balikallu' at this temple is notably large. In front of it, one can find a stunning sculpture and an impressive lamp crafted from granite, both of which draw considerable attention.
Despite the substantial size of the 'Balikallu', devotees can have a glimpse of the Lord by positioning themselves near the entrance of the eastern gopuram. The intricate wooden carvings that adorn the temple are exceptionally appealing. The temple's serene and tidy environment attracts numerous devotees. There are five poojas, three Seeveli, and a daily 'Navakam' conducted at this temple. Historically, during a time when vehicles were nonexistent and individuals traveled on foot to Sabarimala for pilgrimage, they would pause at the Chirakadavu Temple.
Devotees of Ayyappa regarded Chirakadavu Sri Mahadeva as the paternal figure of Lord Ayyappan. Consequently, numerous Ayyappa devotees frequent this temple. Additionally, on Dhanu 24th each year, pilgrims en route to Sabarimala perform "Ayyappan Pattu" at this temple, continuing a tradition established in the past. "Velakali" performance at the Sri Mahadeva temple during festival times is a unique spectacle.
Children aged five to twenty don warrior attire, wielding swords and shields, as they dance in synchrony with the rhythmic drumming. This 'Velathullal' dance is truly a magnificent display. Another notable offering at this temple is the "Meenari." During the 'Karkidaka Vavu,' devotees purchase rice from the temple to feed the fish in the temple pond, leading to a significant influx of devotees eager to partake in this special ritual. It is widely believed that those who engage in this 'Vazhipadu' can experience healing from various ailments.
Additionally, 'Jaladhara and Mrithinjaya Pushpanjali' are offered by numerous devotees seeking relief from illnesses. Similarly, 'Swayamvara Pushpanjali' is presented by many young individuals, regardless of gender, in hopes of improving their marital relationships. It is quite remarkable how these offerings often yield positive outcomes.
A significant ritual known as 'Chaturshatam' is conducted in this temple, representing a unique offering. Owing to the adherence to traditional practices and the temple's revenue, it holds a prominent position among the temples governed by the Devaswom Board. Furthermore, it is one of the limited number of self-sustaining temples within the [Travancore] Dewasom Board.

അയ്യപ്പസ്വാമി ചിറക്കടവിൽ ആയോധനമുറകൾ അഭ്യസിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്ന ഐതിഹ്യവും ഉണ്ട്. ചിറക്കടവിൽ നടക്കുന്ന വേലകളി ഈ വിശ്വാസവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശിവലിംഗവിഗ്രഹം ഒരു വലിയ കൂവളച്ചുവട്ടിൽ സ്വയംഭൂവായി അവതരിച്ചതാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. കുറ്റിക്കാടുകൾക്കിടയിൽ വേറിട്ടുനിന്ന വില്വമരച്ചുവട്ടിൽ കൂവളം പറിയ്ക്കാൻ പാരകൊണ്ട്‌ മണ്ണിൽ കുത്തിയപ്പോൾ രക്തം പൊടിഞ്ഞു.
ഇത് കണ്ട ഭയന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ നിലവിളി കേട്ട് സമീപത്ത് കാലിമേച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ആളുകൾ ഓടിക്കൂടി. രക്തസ്രാവം കണ്ട സ്ഥലത്തെ മണ്ണ് നീക്കിയപ്പോൾ ശിവലിംഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയെന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. ഈ കൂവളച്ചുവട്ടിൽ ഒരു മഹർഷി വസിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. കൂവളച്ചുവട്ടിൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ കൂവമഹർഷി എന്ന പേരിൽ ഈ മഹർഷി പിന്നീട് പ്രശസ്തനായി മാറിയതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദിവസേന അഞ്ചു പൂജകൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. സാധാരണയായി, രാവിലെ അഞ്ചുമണിക്ക് നട തുറക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യം നിർമ്മാല്യദർശനം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു, തുടർന്ന് ഗണപതിഹോമം നടത്തുന്നു. അഭിഷേകത്തിനുശേഷം അവൽ, മലർ, ത്രിമധുരം എന്നിവ നിവേദിക്കുന്നു. ആറരയ്ക്ക് ഉഷഃപൂജ, ഏഴുമണിക്ക് എതൃത്തപൂജ, ഏഴേകാൽമണിയോടുകൂടി എതൃത്തശീവേലി എന്നിവ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
എട്ടുമണിക്ക് പന്തീരടിപൂജ, ഒമ്പതരമണിക്ക് നവകപൂജ, പത്തുമണിക്ക് നവകാഭിഷേകം, നവകാഭിഷേകസമയത്ത് ജലധാര, ക്ഷീരധാര, കരിക്കഭിഷേകം, 108 കലശം എന്നിവ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. പത്തരമണിക്ക് ഉച്ചപൂജ, തുടർന്ന് ഉച്ചശീവേലി നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. പതിനൊന്നുമണിക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രനട അടയ്ക്കുന്നു. വൈകിട്ട് അഞ്ചുമണിക്ക് വീണ്ടും നട തുറക്കുന്നു. അസ്‌തമനസമയത്ത് ദീപാരാധന, ഏഴേമുക്കാലിന് അത്താഴപൂജ, അത്താഴശീവേലി എന്നിവ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. എട്ടുമണിക്ക് നട അടയ്ക്കുന്നു.
