Elamgulam Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is a Hindu temple located in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated along the Main Eastern Highway (SH-8) in the village of Elamgulam, Kottayam district, with its prominent temple ground serving as a landmark.
The temple’s annual festival is renowned for its Gajamela (elephant congregation) and Aanayoottu (elephant feeding) ceremonies, featuring around 15 elephants. The worship of Sastha has been an integral part of South India's ancient religious traditions, and the deity enshrined here is believed to be 800 years old.
The temple's recorded history dates back to the period when it was under the management of the Edapally royal family. After the end of the monarchy, local landlords and the Nair Service Society (NSS) Karayogam took over the administration until 1978, when it was handed over to a broad-based committee comprising members from various Hindu sects.
In 2018, as part of a major renovation, the Chuttambalam (the outer structure enclosing the sanctum sanctorum) was removed.
After five years of reconstruction, in January 2023, the new temple, entirely built of stone, wood, and copper, was inaugurated with a Brahmakalashabhisheka ceremony. Designed to stand the test of time, the temple’s transformation marks a significant milestone in the history of Elamgulam village. Until 2018, the temple structure consisted of brick walls and clay tile roofs supported by wooden battens. During the major renovation, the walls of the Chuttambalam and the shrines of the sub-deities were entirely reconstructed using Krishnashila (black natural stone).
The roofs were covered with copper sheets, enhancing both durability and aesthetics.
The Balikkalpura's ceiling features intricate wooden carvings, while its entablature is layered with detailed craftsmanship, and the corners are adorned with spectacularly painted dragon motifs.
The Aanakkottil (a structure found in temple courtyards across Kerala) is supported by ten pillars, each uniquely designed with a projected standalone Dashavatara sculpture (depicting the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu), beautifully highlighted with mural paintings.
The temple compound walls are built in the Aanappalla style, an ancient architectural technique where the vertical cross-section of the wall resembles an elephant viewed from behind, a design rarely found in modern temples. On the last day of the temple festival, the Gajamela is traditionally held at the East Panthal(pavilion) of the temple.
This grand elephant procession is followed by the Aanayoottu, a special ritual where elephants are fed with nutritious rice balls mixed with fruits and nuts as an offering. This ceremony symbolizes devotion, prosperity, and the well-being of elephants, attracting a large number of devotees and spectators.

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ പാലാ-പൊൻകുന്നം റോഡിൽ ഇളങ്ങുളം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് വിശാലമായ ക്ഷേത്രമൈതാനത്തോടുകൂടി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇളങ്ങുളം ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം. വർഷം തോറുമുള്ള തിരുവുത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് 15ഓളം ഗജവീരന്മാർ അണിനിരക്കുന്ന ഗജമേളയും ആനയൂട്ടും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
മണ്ഡലകാലത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ഇവിടെ അയ്യപ്പഭക്തന്മാർക്ക് വിരിവെക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള വിപുലമായ സൗകര്യവും വൈകിട്ട് അന്നദാനവും ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ശാസ്താവിനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത് ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയുടെ പുരാതന ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ഇവിടെയുള്ള പ്രതിഷ്ഠയ്ക്ക് 800 വർഷം പഴക്കമുണ്ടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഗൃഹസ്ഥാശ്രമീഭാവത്തിൽ, വലം കൈയിൽ അമൃതകലശവും ധരിച്ച് അഭീഷ്ടവരദായകനായ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.

ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുഖ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ശ്രീധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന് പുറമേ, നാലമ്പതിനുള്ളിൽ ഗണപതിയുടെയും, പുറത്ത് സർപ്പദേവങ്ങൾ, രക്ഷസ്സുകൾ, വെളിച്ചപാട്, കാവൽയക്ഷി, ശിവപാർവതി സങ്കൽപ്പത്തിലുള്ള അന്തിമഹാകാളൻ, അയനയക്ഷി എന്നീ മൂർത്തികൾ കുടികൊള്ളുന്ന മരുതുകാവ്, ക്ഷേത്ര ചൈതന്യത്തോളം തന്നെ പഴക്കമുള്ള മാളികപ്പുറത്തമ്മ എന്നിവയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ശബരിമല അയ്യപ്പക്ഷേത്രവുമായുള്ള ബന്ധം വിളിച്ചോതുന്നതും പരമ്പരാഗത തീർത്ഥാടനപാതയിലെ പുണ്യമലകളായി കണക്കാക്കുന്ന ചക്കിപ്പാറമല, തലപ്പാറമല എന്നിവയും പ്രധാനമായ മലദൈവങ്ങളായും കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
2018 വരെ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഘടന കട്ടയുപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള ചുവരുകളും ഓടു മേഞ്ഞ മേൽക്കൂരയുമുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. പ്രധാന നവീകരണ വേളയിൽ, ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിന്റെയും ഉപദേവതകളുടെയും ചുവരുകൾ പൂർണ്ണമായും കൃഷ്ണശില (കറുത്ത പ്രകൃതിദത്ത കല്ല്) കൊണ്ടാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. മേൽക്കൂരകൾ ചെമ്പ് ഷീറ്റുകൾ കൊണ്ട് പൊതിഞ്ഞു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ബലിക്കൽപുര ശില്പചാരുതയാർന്ന വ്യാളീരൂപങ്ങളാലും ആരക്കാലുകളാലും പണിതീർത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ആനക്കൊട്ടിലിന്റെ തൂണുകൾ ശില്പഭംഗി തുളുമ്പുന്ന വലിയ ദശാവതാര രൂപങ്ങളാലും അനവധി കൊത്തുപണികളാലും അലങ്കരിച്ച് മ്യൂറൽ പെയിന്റിംഗുകൾ നിർമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന പുരാതന ശൈലിയായ ആനപ്പള്ള ശൈലിയിലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചുറ്റുമതിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മകരത്തിലെ ഉത്ര നക്ഷത്രം ആറാട്ടായി നിർണ്ണയിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന വിധത്തിൽ ആറ് ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവത്തിനായി കൊടിയേറുന്നു. ആറാട്ട് ദിവസം ഗജമേളയും ആഘോഷപരിപാടികളും സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള വെള്ളാംങ്കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രചിറയിലാണ് ആറാട്ട് ചടങ്ങുകൾ നടക്കുന്നത്.
ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവത്തിന്റെ അവസാന ദിവസം, കിഴക്കേ പന്തലിൽ ഗജമേളയും തുടർന്ന് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ആനയൂട്ടും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ആനകൾക്ക് പഴങ്ങളും മറ്റ് പോഷകാഹാരങ്ങളും ചേർത്ത് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ചോറുരുളുകളാണ് നൽകുന്നത്.
