Ithithanam Elankavu Devi Temple, located near Changanassery in Kottayam district, is a renowned temple with a rich history. Accessible via the West Thuruthi Road, the temple is approximately 500 years old.
The main deity of the temple is Goddess Bhadrakali, depicted in her mild form. This temple holds significant importance as one of the major Devi temples in the Travancore region and is widely revered by devotees for its unique features.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Bhagwati, who is believed to have arrived under the umbrella of a devotee named Vellapally Panicker.
According to local legends, Vellapally Panicker, after visiting the Kodungallur temple, was carrying the Goddess in his umbrella, and she followed him, eventually coming to rest at the temple. Over time, the temple was relocated to its present location, though its original site, Ambalakodi, is located just half a kilometer away from the current temple. The temple is famous for this unique legend and remains a vital spiritual center in the region. The Gajamela festival at the Ithithanam Elankavu Devi Temple is one of the most significant Gajamela festivals in Kerala, attracting thousands of devotees and visitors each year.
Known locally as Ithithanam Gaja Mela, it is renowned for its unique procession of elephants, which are paraded without any ornaments. The festival includes the prestigious Gajaraja Ratna, a tribute to the Suryakaladi Temple, and is one of the key highlights of the fair.
On the day of the Gajamela, the elephant that is honored with the Gajaraja Ratna rises to perform the Kazhachasribali, Sreebhootabali, and the lighting of the lamp, all of which are important rituals in the temple's celebrations.
The main festival of the temple, however, is the ten-day long Thiruvutsavam, which begins on the occasion of Vishu. The ninth day of the festival is marked by the grand yard festival, where traditional temple arts such as Arjuna dance, Velakali, Pulavrithamkali, Kazhacheeveli, Sree Bhoothabali, and vilakku are performed, adding to the grandeur and cultural significance of the event.

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിയോട് അടുത്തുള്ള മറ്റൊരു പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ദേവീക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്തിത്താനം ഇളങ്കാവ് ദേവിക്ഷേത്രം. 500 വർഷങ്ങൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ഭദ്രകാളി സങ്കൽപം കൊണ്ടാണ് പ്രശസ്തം. ഓലക്കുടയിൽ വന്നു കയറിയ ഭഗവതിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വിശേഷങ്ങൾ അനവധിയാണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഗജമേളകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്തിത്താനം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഗജമേള.
ഈ മേളയിൽ എത്തുന്ന ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ ആനക്ക്, സൂര്യകാലടി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഗജരാജരത്നം നൽകുന്നത് ആണ് പ്രത്യേകത. അവിടുത്തെ ഗജമേളയുടെ പ്രധാന പ്രത്യേകതയായത് ആനകളെ ആടയാഭരണങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാതെ എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ മാത്രമേ ഈ ഗജമേളക്കായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് എത്തുമുള്ളൂ. ഗജരത്നം നേടിയ ആനയാണ്, ശ്രീഭൂതബലിയും കാഴ്ചശീവേലിയും ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയത്ത് എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്നത്.
വിഷുവിനോടുള്ള കൊടിയേറി പത്തു ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന തിരുവുത്സവം, ഇത്തിത്താനം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമാണ്. ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ഒൻപതാം ദിവസം ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഗജമേള, അർജ്ജുന നൃത്തം, വേലകളി, പുലവൃത്തം, കാഴ്ചശീവേലി, ശ്രീഭൂതബലി, വിളക്ക് തുടങ്ങിയ ക്ഷേത്രകലകൾ ഒരുപാട് പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. ഉത്സവ നാളുകളിൽ, ഇളങ്കാവിലമ്മയുടെ ചിറമുട്ടം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ളത്തും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം, ചിറമുട്ടം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവൻ‍റെയാണ് ഇളങ്കാവിലമ്മയുടെ പിതാവ്. അതിനാൽ, ചിറമുട്ടം മഹാദേവൻറെ ആറാട്ട് ഇളങ്കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രസന്നിധിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. മഹാദേവനെ വണങ്ങി കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷം മാത്രമേ ഇളങ്കാവിലമ്മ എഴുന്നള്ളുകയുള്ളൂ എന്നാണ് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
