Kangazha Mahadevar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated along the Kottayam-Manimala route, approximately 20 kilometers from Changanassery in the Kottayam District of Kerala.
The deity enshrined in the temple is swayambhu, believed to have been discovered by local tribesmen while they were sharpening their swords. It is said that the stone used for this purpose began to bleed, leading to the installation of the Shivling by Kanva Maharshi. The main deity is oriented to the west.
The annual festival, known as utsavam, takes place during the Malayalam month of Kumbham.
This eight-day celebration commences on Moolam Nakshatram and concludes with the Arattu ceremony. On the final day, the utsava murti of the deity is ceremoniously removed from the shrine for ritual bathing. The festivities include caparisoned elephants and melam as integral components of the rituals. Shivratri is also a significant festival celebrated at the temple. In addition to the primary deity, the temple also honors Upa Devatas, which include Sastha, Durga, Ganapathy, Nagam, and Rakshas.
The Pradosham that occurs just prior to Mahashivratri holds considerable significance within the temple. As part of the festival, Melam, the traditional music of Kerala temples featuring five instruments, is performed. During this time, various traditional performing arts, music, and dance are showcased. Additionally, the vibrant processions serve as another significant attraction. Numerous distinctive offerings are presented at the shrine throughout this period.
കങ്ങഴ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 20 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ, കോട്ടയം - മണിമല റോഡിൽ കങ്ങഴ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. മലയാളം കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. 8 ദിവസത്തെ ഈ ഉത്സവം കുംഭത്തിലെ മൂലം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ കൊടിയേറ്റോടെ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു, ആറാട്ടോടെ സമാപിക്കുന്നു. അവസാന ദിവസത്തിൽ, ആചാരപരമായ സ്നാനത്തിനായി ദേവന്റെ ഉത്സവ മൂർത്തി ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്തെടുക്കുന്നു.
ആനയും മേളവും ഈ ആചാരത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ സ്വയംഭൂവായതാണ്. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ദർശനമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് ആദിവാസികൾ മൂർച്ചകൂട്ടാൻ വാൾ കല്ലിൽ ഉരസിയുമ്പോൾ രക്തം പൊടിയുന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ പെടുകയും, അങ്ങനെ അവിടെ ശിവലിംഗത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് കണ്വ മഹർഷി അവിടെ ശിവലിംഗം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതകൾ ശാസ്താവ്, ദുർഗ്ഗ, ഗണപതി, നാഗരാജ, രക്ഷസ് എന്നിവരാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ആഘോഷം ശിവരാത്രിയാണ്.
മഹാശിവരാത്രിക്ക് തൊട്ടുമുമ്പ് വരുന്ന പ്രദോഷത്തിന് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. കങ്ങഴ പ്രദോഷം ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി അഞ്ച് വാദ്യങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയ പരമ്പരാഗത കേരള ക്ഷേത്ര സംഗീതമായ മേളം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഈ കാലയളവിൽ പരമ്പരാഗത കലാരൂപങ്ങൾ, സംഗീതം, നൃത്തം എന്നിവ അരങ്ങേറുന്നു. വർണാഭമായ ഘോഷയാത്രകൾ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ആകർഷണമാണ്.
