Kavil Shree Bhagwati Temple is a historic site situated 1.5 kilometers away from Changanassery in the Kottayam district.
Kavil Bhagavathy Temple serves as the ancestral temple for the Changanassery Idam, a prominent branch of the Thekkumkoor Royal Family located in Vembalanadu. The principal deity worshipped at this temple is Kavilamma, regarded as an incarnation of Goddess Bhadrakali.
During the reign of Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Venad, specifically in the year Kollavarsham 925, the Thekkumkoor Royal Family was experiencing a period of decline, leading to the temple's administration being transferred to the Thiruvithamkoor Devaswom Board. An annual festival known as Thiruvutsavam is held to honor and celebrate the divine presence of Goddess Bhadrakali within the temple.
The festival commences with a ceremonial flag hoisting on the inaugural day. Following this, various events such as Utsavabali and Samooha Sadya take place from the subsequent day. The primary highlights of the festival include Arattu, a grand procession, fireworks, and chenda melam. Throughout the festival duration, cultural programs, temple arts, and folk arts are showcased.Meenabharani commemorates the birthday of the Goddess. It is a tradition to escort the Goddess to the Puzhavath Anandapuram Sri Krishnaswamy Temple on that evening following the Deeparadhana ceremony. Throughout the Mandalakalam period, the rituals of Kalamezhuthum Pattum are performed for a duration of forty-one days.
കാവിൽ ശ്രീ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി
കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം ഒന്നര കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ചരിത്രപരമായ കാവിൽ ശ്രീ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. വെമ്പലനാട്ടു സ്വരൂപത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട തെക്കുംകൂർ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ശാഖയായ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി ഇടത്തിലെ കുടുംബപരദേവത ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. കാവിലമ്മയായ ഭദ്രകാളിയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ദേവത.
കൊല്ലവർഷം 925-ൽ വേണാട്ടു രാജാവായ അനിഴം തിരുനാൾ മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയുടെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ തെക്കുംകൂർ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ പതനം സംഭവിച്ചതിനാൽ രാജകീയ പരിലാളനവും സംരക്ഷണവും നഷ്ടമായെങ്കിലും, സർവ്വാഭീഷ്ടപ്രദായിനിയായ കാവിലമ്മ ജനപദങ്ങളിലെ വിവിധ മതസ്ഥരായ ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ ഇഷ്ടദേവതയും ആരാധനാമൂർത്തിയും ആശാകേന്ദ്രവുമാണ്.
ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ സമചതുരാകൃതിയും കിഴക്കുവശത്തെ നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപവും ചെമ്പ് മേഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. കിഴക്കേ നടയിൽ തെക്കുവടക്ക് വലിയമ്പലമുണ്ട്. അതിന്റെ തെക്കേ അറ്റത്താണ് തിടപ്പള്ളി, ചെമ്പു പൊതിഞ്ഞ കൊടിമരവും (ധ്വജം) ഉയർന്ന ആനക്കൊട്ടിലും മനോഹരമായ അലങ്കാര ഗോപുരവും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. മംഗല്യഭാഗ്യത്തിനായി സ്ത്രീകൾ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചകളിൽ രാഹുകാലത്ത് നാരങ്ങാവിളക്ക് കൊളുത്തുന്ന പ്രത്യേക ഒരു ആചാരം നടന്നു വരുന്നു.
വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്നു മുതൽ ധനു 12 വരെയുള്ള മണ്ഡലകാലത്തിന്റെ അവസാനത്തിൽ നാൽപത്തി ഒന്നാം ദിവസം ആറാട്ട് വരത്തക്കവിധത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പത്തുദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. പള്ളിവേട്ട കിഴക്കു മാറിയ ആൽചുവട്ടിലും, ആറാട്ട് പെരുന്നാളിൽ തൃക്കണ്ണാപുരം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കുളത്തിലുമാണ് ഈ ആഘോഷം. മീനഭരണി ദേവിയുടെ ജന്മനാളായി ഈ ദിവസം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. വൈകിട്ട് ദേവിയെ ദീപാ രാധനയ്ക്കുശേഷം പുഴവാത് ആനന്ദപുരം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്ന പതിവും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. മണ്ഡലകാലത്ത് നാൽപത്തി ഒന്നു ദിവസം കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും നടന്നു വരുന്നു.
