Poothrukkovil Sree Krishna Temple, located in the Kottayam district, is an ancient pilgrimage site. This temple is notable for being one of the few where the principal deity, Lord Krishna, is depicted alongside his consort Rukmini, both facing west.
The eight-day festival at the temple is conducted in such a way that Pallivetta takes place on the day preceding Guruvayoor Ekadashi. On the day of Guruvayoor Ekadashi, Ekadashi Vilakku is observed. A special payasam, prepared from wheat and green payar, is served on this day. The festival at the temple concludes the day following Arattu, symbolically indicating that celebrations occur throughout the year within the temple.
The Upa Devatas worshipped at the temple include Bhagavathy, Ganapathy, Shiva, Nagam, and Yakshi. It is believed that the murti in the temple was consecrated by Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, who named the area Gurusristhanam, which later became known as Kurichithanam. The temple commemorates Akshaya Patra Samarpanam during the month of Vaishaka.
An annual Bhagavata Saptaham is conducted at the temple. It is believed that the land on which the temple is situated was granted tax-exempt status by the Vadakkumkoor King to Chenothillam. When Chenothillam was abandoned, the properties belonging to the illam were transferred to the temple. In honor of this occurrence, the Shradham of Chenothamma is observed at the temple each year.

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ ഒരു സുപ്രസിദ്ധ തീർഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമായ പൂതൃക്കോവിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണഭഗവാനും രുക്മിണിദേവിയുമൊപ്പം പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. "കുചേലസദ്ഗതി" ദേവസങ്കൽപം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അതിന്റെ അനന്തമായ ദിവ്യചൈതന്യത്തോടെ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ആശ്രയമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിലെ ഗുരുവായൂർ ഏകാദശി ദിനത്തിൽ ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന "ഏകാദശി വിളക്ക്" മഹോത്സവം ഇവിടെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടത് ആയാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ദശാവതാര ചന്ദനം ചാർത്തൽ, ഏകാദശി മഹോത്സവം എന്നിവ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ദൂരദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ അനുഗ്രഹം തേടി എത്തുന്നതോടെ പൂതൃക്കോവിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം ‘ദക്ഷിണ ഗുരുവായൂർ’ എന്ന വിശേഷണത്തിന് അർഹമാകുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവിയും മഹേശ്വരനും ഉപദേവതകളായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ളപ്പോഴേക്കും വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറേ മൂലയിൽ നാഗദേവതകളും യക്ഷിയമ്മയും സന്നിധ്യപൂർവ്വം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. രോഹിണിയും തിരുവോണം നാളുകളിലും പ്രത്യേക പൂജകൾ നടക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം ഉഷസന്ധ്യ പൂജ, തിരുവോണ പൂജ, പാൽപ്പായസം, നെയ്യ് വിളക്ക് തുടങ്ങിയ വഴിപാടുകളും ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ അർപ്പിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാ വർഷവും അഷ്ടമി രോഹിണി വലിയ ഉത്സാഹത്തോടെയും ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായ ചടങ്ങുകളോടെയും ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
