Poonjar Madhura Meenakshi Temple, constructed by the Pandya dynasty along the banks of the Meenachil River, is dedicated to their guardian deity, Goddess Meenakshi Devi, and Lord Shiva, known as Sundareswarar.
The processional idol, known as the utchava murthy, is believed to have been transported from Madurai to this location by the former ruler of Pandya Nadu. The principal festival celebrated at this temple is Navaratri. On festive occasions, it is mandatory to wear traditional attire to gain entry into the temple.
These idols were brought to Poonjar by the Pandyan king Manavikraman during the 11th century. This temple is among the oldest constructed by the Poonjar royal lineage, established in the mid-11th century by a Pandyan prince. After renouncing his throne, he carried the procession idols during his journeys to establish a new kingdom, ultimately selecting Poonjar as the site.
Daily rituals are performed, and Navaratri is observed with traditional ceremonies, a practice that has persisted for centuries. The temple is located in close proximity to the Poonjar Sree Dharma Shasta Temple.
പൂഞ്ഞാർ മധുര മീനാക്ഷി ക്ഷേത്രം
പൂഞ്ഞാറിൽ നിന്ന് 2.4 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ, കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ചരിത്രപ്രസിദ്ധമായ പൂഞ്ഞാർ മധുര മീനാക്ഷി ക്ഷേത്രം, മധുരയിലെ മധുര മീനാക്ഷി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഉൽസവ മൂർത്തികളാൽ സമ്പന്നമാണ്. ഈ വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ, ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവങ്ങളിൽ ഘോഷയാത്രയ്ക്കായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവയാണ്, മീനാക്ഷിയുടെയും ശിവനായ സുന്ദരേശൻറെയും പ്രതിമകളാണ്.
പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ, പാണ്ഡ്യ രാജാവ് മാനവിക്രമൻ ഈ വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ പൂഞ്ഞാറിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവന്നതാണ്. പൂഞ്ഞാർ രാജകുടുംബം നിർമ്മിച്ച ഏറ്റവും പുരാതനമായ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്. പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മധ്യത്തിൽ പാണ്ഡ്യ രാജകുമാരൻ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.
സിംഹാസനം വിട്ട ശേഷം പുതിയ രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ യാത്രകളിൽ ഘോഷയാത്രാ വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ കൈവശം വെച്ചിരുന്നു. യാത്രയുടെ അവസാനം പൂഞ്ഞാറാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. ദിവസേന പൂജകൾ നടത്തുകയും നവരാത്രി സമയത്ത് പരമ്പരാഗത ആചാരങ്ങൾ ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
