Moothedathukavu Bhagavathi Temple is located 2.5 km from Vaikom town in Kottayam district. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, who is believed to be the daughter of Lord Mahadeva at Vaikom.
Moothedathukavu Bhagavathi Temple is unique because it remains open for worship only for nine months of the year.
According to legend, Moothedathukavu Bhagavathi is associated with the story of Kannaki and Kovilan. It is believed that the idol here represents Kannaki burning the city of Madurai in revenge for the Pandya king who wrongfully executed her husband.
The temple follows an extraordinary tradition where the Goddess symbolically travels to Madurai to be with her husband and returns at the beginning of the Karkidakam month (Ramayana month), marking the resumption of daily poojas.
One of the major festivals at this temple is Kumbhabharani, which includes the sacred ritual of Garudan Thookkam. This ritual is performed as an offering to the Goddess, drawing numerous devotees. The temple holds immense spiritual and historical significance, making it one of the unique Bhagavathi temples in Kerala.

വൈക്കം പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് രണ്ടര കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന വൈക്കം മൂത്തേടത്തുകാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം നിരവധി പ്രത്യേകതകളാൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ആചാരങ്ങളും ആണ്ടിലൊരിക്കൽ ഭഗവതി മധുരയിലെ ഭർത്തൃസന്നിധിയിലേക്ക് യാത്രപോകുന്നു എന്ന സങ്കല്പത്തിൽ ആധാരിതമായ ചടങ്ങുകളുമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന വിശേഷത.
ഭഗവതി മധുര സന്ദർശനം കഴിഞ്ഞ് കർക്കിടകമാസത്തിൽ തിരികെയെത്തുമ്പോൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ നിത്യപൂജകൾ പുനരാരംഭിക്കും. അതിനാൽ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം വർഷത്തിൽ ഒമ്പത് മാസം മാത്രം നട തുറന്ന് പൂജകൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. മൂത്തേടത്തുകാവ് ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം കണ്ണകി-കോവിലൻ ചരിത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾകൊണ്ടും പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ഭർത്താവിനെ വധിച്ച പാണ്ട്യരാജാവിനോടുള്ള പ്രതികാരത്തിന് മധുരാ നഗരം ചുട്ടെരിച്ച കണ്ണകിയുടെ രൂപമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
വിഷു ദിനത്തിൽ ദേവി ഭർത്താവിനോട് കൂടിയിരിക്കാനായി മധുരയിലേക്ക് തിരിക്കുന്നു, ഈ സമയത്ത് അവിടെ ദേവിയെ "വരത്ത ഭഗവതി" എന്ന പേരിൽ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. രാമായണമാസാരംഭത്തോടെയാണ് ദേവി തിരികെയെത്തുന്നത്.വൈക്കത്തപ്പന്റെ പുത്രിയായ ഭദ്രകാളിയുടെ ചൈതന്യവുമാണ് മൂത്തേടത്തുകാവ് ദേവിയുടേതായി കരുതുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്ര നട തുറന്നാൽ തീയാട്ട്, വില്ലുപാട്ട്, തെക്കുപുറത്ത് പാട്ട് എന്നിവയോടുകൂടിയ ദർശനം പുനരാരംഭിക്കും.
