Neendoor Subrahmanya Swami Temple Onamthuruth Kottayam

Neendoor Subrahmanya Swami Temple is a historic site that has brought glory and fame to the local area. Myths say that the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa worshipped at this temple. The deity of the temple is Lord Muruga. Neendoor Subrahmanya Swami Temple hosts the arattu festival, which is celebrated on a grand scale on the Medashasti day in April–May every year.

Ottanarangamala Samarppanam is one of the important rituals of this temple. In the temple, the furious form of Murugan is worshipped. The Vel is pointed downwards. Murugan is worshipped here in the form of Devasenapathi, the supreme general of the holy forces. The deity is said to be in an angry and furious mood as he had fought with Tharakasuran in a confrontation known as the Tharakasura Nigraha Bhavam. He faces east as seen in most of the temples.

Mahaganapathi, Dhakshinamoorthi (Lord Shiva), Thooninmel Bhagavathi (Bhadrakali), Shathavu, Durga, Nagaraja, and Bhahmarakshs are also worshipped at the temple as subordinate deities. Tuesday is the important day for the temple in regards to the worship of Murugan. Neendoor is a sacred place with many temples, attracting numerous devotees who come to pray to Lord Muruga. The poojas in the temple are conducted by Brahmin priests. The temple's main festival takes place in April or May, lasting for six days.

Neendoor Subrahmanya Swami Temple hosts the grand arattu festival on Medashasti day. Thaipooyam is another significant festival celebrated at the temple. Lord Subrahmanya, also known as Karthikeya in regions outside Dravidian traditions, is revered in Kerala as Subrahmanya Swamy. He is also known by names such as Mayil Vahanan, Murugan, Senthil, Velan, Kandan, Kadamban, Arumugam, Devasenapathi, and Shanmugam. Worshipped as the commander of the divine army and a symbol of victory, his vahana (vehicle) is the peacock, and his weapon is the Vel.

Many devotees visit the temple to offer prayers and perform rituals seeking success in their endeavors. The temple is known for conducting the ancient and unique ritual of Ottanarangamala Samarppanam, a special practice found only at this temple of Lord Subrahmanya Swamy. At Neendoor Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, Lord Subrahmanya is depicted in his victorious form, having just defeated the demon Tharakasuran. All temple rituals are performed with strict adherence to traditional rules and regulations.

The temple is a classic example of Kerala temple architecture, constructed using laterite stone, terracotta tiles, and teak wood—materials abundant in the region. The vast rectangular structure features a porch entrance, giving it the appearance of a traditional Kerala royal house. The main deity, Lord Subrahmanya Swamy, stands in the sanctum sanctorum holding his divine weapon, the Vel, against an ornate gold backdrop. In front of the temple stands a grand monolithic Deepa Sthamba (stone lamp post), adding to its magnificence. The temple is also adorned with intricate wooden carvings that enhance its architectural beauty.

നീണ്ടൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ നീണ്ടൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന മുരുകൻ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് നീണ്ടൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. പ്രദേശത്തിന് പ്രശസ്തിയും മഹത്വവും കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ഒരു ചരിത്ര സ്ഥലമാണ് ഇത്. പാണ്ഡവരും വ്യാസ മുനിയും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ആരാധന നടത്തിയിരുന്നതായി പുരാണങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ മുരുകനാണ്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഏപ്രിൽ-മെയ് മാസങ്ങളിലെ മേടഷഷ്ടി ദിനത്തിൽ വിപുലമായി ആറാട്ടുത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.

ഒറ്റനാരങ്ങാമാല സമർപ്പണം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആചാരങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്.ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ മുരുകന്റെ ഉഗ്രരൂപത്തെയാണ് ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. വേൽ താഴേക്ക് ചൂണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. പുണ്യശക്തികളുടെ പരമോന്നത സൈന്യാധിപിയായ ദേവസേനാപതിയുടെ രൂപത്തിലാണ് മുരുകനെ ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. "താരകാസുര നിഗ്രഹ ഭാവം" എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിൽ താരകാസുരനുമായി യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തതിനാൽ ദേവൻ കോപഭാവത്തോടെയാണ് ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്.

അദ്ദേഹം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായാണ് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്, മിക്ക മുരുകക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെയും പോലെ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ മഹാഗണപതി, ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി (ശിവൻ), തൂണിൻമേൽ ഭഗവതി (ഭദ്രകാളി), ശതാവു, ദുർഗ്ഗ, നാഗരാജാവ്, ഭഹ്മരക്ഷസുകൾ എന്നിവരെയും ഉപദേവതകളായി ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. മുരുകന്റെ ആരാധനയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പ്രധാന ദിവസമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ബ്രാഹ്മണ പുരോഹിതന്മാരാണ് പൂജകൾ നടത്തുന്നത്.

ഏപ്രിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മെയ് മാസങ്ങളിൽ ആറ് ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനില്ക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമാണ് നീണ്ടൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവം. മേട ഷഷ്ടി ദിനത്തിൽ വിപുലമായ രീതിയിൽ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ആറാട്ടുത്സവം ഇവിടെ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. തൈപ്പൂയം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമാണ്. നീണ്ടൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിന്റെ ശില്പശാസ്ത്ര പൈതൃകത്തിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണമാണ്. ലാറ്ററൈറ്റ് കല്ല്, ടെറാക്കോട്ട ടൈലുകൾ, തേക്ക് മരം എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രകൃതിസൗന്ദര്യത്തിൽ ലയിച്ച വിശാലമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പരമ്പരാഗത കേരള ശൈലിയിൽ നിർമിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു രാജകീയ ഭവനത്തെ പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി വേലുമായി നിൽക്കുന്ന ദിവ്യരൂപത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. പശ്ചാത്തലമാകുന്ന ഭിത്തികൾ സ്വർണ്ണ അലങ്കാരത്തോടെ ശോഭിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനുമുന്നിൽ ഏകശിലാ കൊത്തുപണികളോടെ നിർമ്മിച്ച ദീപസ്തംഭം (വിലക്കുമരം) ദർശനീയമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഘടനയിൽ പൂർത്തിയായി മരത്തിൽ കൊത്തിയെടുത്ത മനോഹരമായ ശില്പങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്.
