പരശുരാമൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ശിവക്ഷേത്രം എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഇത് പല സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിപ്രാചീനമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്തരുടെ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ നിറവേറ്റുന്ന, ഉഗ്രമായ രൂപത്തിൽ, ഉപദേവതകളില്ലാതെ സന്നിധിയുള്ള സർവ്വാഭിഷ്ടവരദനായ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം ലഭിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്കും അഷ്‌ടൈശ്വര്യങ്ങളും ആഗ്രഹിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങളും സിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
രാജഭരണ കാലത്ത് തമ്പ്രാൻക്കാൻ മാരുടെയും പിന്നീട് ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെയും കീഴിലായിരുന്നു ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. സ്വർണ കൊടിമരത്തോടുകൂടിയ രാജകീയ ഭംഗിയിൽ ഇത് നിലനിന്നിരുന്നുവെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ടിപ്പുവിന്റെ പടയോട്ട കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം ആക്രമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, സ്വർണവും മറ്റ് മുതലുകളും കൊള്ളയടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
ആക്രമണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ആരാധനാ മൂർത്തിയെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ, പൂജാരി പഞ്ചാക്ഷരി മന്ത്രം ജപിച്ച് ശിവലിംഗത്തെ ആലിംഗനം ചെയ്തു. ഈ സമയത്ത്, കൊള്ളക്കാർ പൂജാരിയെ വെട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു . ബിംബത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന മുറിവ് അന്നുണ്ടായതാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. മരണമടഞ്ഞ പൂജാരിയുടെ തേജസ് ഭഗവാനിൽ വിലയം പ്രാപിച്ചതായി തെളിയിക്കുകയും, പിന്നീട് പുനരുദ്ധാരണ സമയത്ത് ബിംബം ഗോളകയിറക്കി സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും, ഭഗവാനിൽ വിലയം പ്രാപിച്ച രക്ഷസ്സിനെ ക്ഷേത്രമതിൽക്കകത്ത് പ്രത്യേകമായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
