Meenabharani festival associated with the Poonadkavu Bhagavathi Temple offers a unique experience for devotees. On this occasion, people of all ages from various parts of the region flock to the temple premises. The celebrations are particularly significant during Navaratri and the Thrikarthika festival in the month of Vrischika.
It is believed that on the Thrikarthika day of the Vrischika month, the heavens and the earth converge in a sacred union at the temple, where the enchanting illumination of Lakshadeepam enhances the atmosphere, drawing even the divine beings to witness the fervent Kartika festival. One of the attractions at the temple is the Chootupadayani, a ceremonial event associated with the festivals of the deities in southern Kerala. This ritual involves the creation of a Chootu, which is made by binding together dried coconut fronds.
The Chootu, lit with fire, is carried to the temple accompanied by a procession of musicians. As the flames of the Chootu diminish, another is ignited in succession. Participants joyfully dance along the way, and by the time they reach the temple vicinity, the number of Chootus increases. At the temple entrance, the priest and his team welcome the Chootupadayani. Subsequently, they arrive at the temple sanctum accompanied by music, flower offerings, fireworks.
The practice of Kalamezhuthumpattum in temples is a significant ritual conducted in Devi temples. Primarily observed in Bhadrakali temples, this tradition has now been adopted in most temples. The singing occurs after the Kolam is drawn. Kolam and singing are integral to various rituals, including Mudiyeettu, Theyyam, Kolam Thullal, Sarppam Thullal, and Pana, making Kolam an indispensable part of these ceremonies. നേർച്ച കഴിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിയുടെ ഭവനത്തിൽ നിന്ന് തീ കൊളുത്തിയ ചൂട്ട്, വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു. കത്തിച്ച ചൂട്ട് തീരുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച് അടുത്തത് കത്തിക്കും. എല്ലാവരും ആഹ്ലാദത്തോടെ നൃത്തചുവടുകൾ വച്ചുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കും പോവുക. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപം എത്തുമ്പോഴേക്കും ചൂട്ടുകളുടെ എണ്ണം വർദ്ധിക്കും. ക്ഷേത്രഅതിർത്തിയിൽ പൂജാരിയും സംഘവും ചൂട്ടു പടയണിക്കാരെ സ്വീകരിക്കും. തുടർന്ന്, വാദ്യമേളം, പൂത്തിരി, പടക്കം, കരിമരുന്ന് പ്രയോഗം തുടങ്ങിയവയോടുകൂടി ക്ഷേത്രസന്നിധിയിലെത്തും.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നടത്തുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന അനുഷ്ഠാനമാണ്.
ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ കൂടുതലായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ചടങ്ങ്, ഇന്ന് പല ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലും ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കളമെഴുത്തിന് ശേഷം പാട്ട് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും, മുടിയേറ്റ്, തീയ്യാട്ട്, കോലം തുളളൽ, സർപ്പം തുളളൽ, പാന തുടങ്ങിയ അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളിൽ കളമെഴുത്ത് അനിവാര്യമായ ഒരു ഘടകമാണ്. കാളി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, യക്ഷി, ഗന്ധർവൻ, നാഗങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ ദേവമൂർത്തികൾക്കായി പ്രധാനമായും കളമെഴുത്ത് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
