Sree Karippadavathu Kavu Temple is an ancient and sacred temple located in Kurichithanam, Uzhavoor, Kottayam district, revered for centuries as a spiritual refuge for thousands of devotees.
Sree Karippadavathu Kavu Temple is unique as it enshrines Bhadrakali, Shiva, and Durga within the same sanctum, facing west, a rare architectural feature. Among them, Bhadrakali is the primary deity, while Shiva was consecrated later. Several sub-deities are also worshipped here, including Yakshi, Anthimahakalan, Ailiyakshi, Rakshas, Nagaraja, and other serpent deities.
The temple holds deep ancestral ties with the Kakkaru Pilla and Madham families, and all religious activities are carried out with the dedicated support of devotees.The temple is well-known for its Kumbhabharani and Meenabharani festivals, which attract large gatherings of devotees. A distinctive ritual takes place on the first day of Vrischikam (mid-November), when the descendants of indigenous tribes visit the temple to honor Vanadurga (Forest Goddess) at the Balithara near the western entrance.
They arrive carrying bundles of harvested grain, singing folk songs, and performing ritual dances—women engage in Thalayattam (graceful head movements), while men participate in Koladi Kali (stick dance). This tradition transforms the temple into a vibrant center of agricultural celebration, symbolizing gratitude for nature’s blessings.
Sree Karippadavathu Kavu is the family deity (Kuladevata) of nine regions—Perunthanam, Uzhavoor, Kudakkachira, Palakkattumala, Nellithanam Mala, Andoor, Marangattupally, Kuryanadu, and Kurichithanam. The temple’s profound divine energy inspired Madham Sridharan Namboothiri to compose the renowned hymn Ambikashtaprasam, which he wrote after a year of intense worship and meditation within the temple premises.

കാക്കാറുപിള്ളിയും മഠവും അടങ്ങുന്ന മനക്കാരുടെ ഊരാണ്മയിലുള്ള ഈ കാവിലെ എല്ലാ ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളും ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ അകർത്തൃത്വപൂർണമായ സഹകരണത്തോടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. യക്ഷി, അന്തിമഹാകാളൻ, ഐലിയക്ഷി, രക്ഷസ്സ്, നാഗരാജാവ്, സർപ്പങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉപദേവതകളായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
കുംഭഭരണിയും മീനഭരണിയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളായിരിക്കുന്നു, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്നിന് ആദിമനിവാസികളുടെ സന്തതികൾ സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷഭേദമില്ലാതെ എത്തി കതിർ കറ്റകളേന്തി പാട്ടും തലയാട്ടവും കോലാടിയുമായി പങ്കെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു കാർഷികോത്സവത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീതിയുണ്ടാവുന്നു.
പെരുന്താനം, ഉഴവൂർ, കുടക്കച്ചിറ, പാലക്കാട്ടുമല, നെല്ലിത്താനത്തു മല, ആണ്ടൂർ, മറങ്ങാട്ടുപള്ളി, കുര്യനാട്, കുറിച്ചിത്താനം എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഒൻപതു കരക്കാരുടെ കുലദൈവമായ ഈ ഭഗവതിയുടെ മഹത്വം കവി മഠം ശ്രീധരൻ നമ്പൂതിരി രചിച്ച അംബികാഷ്ട പ്രാസത്തിലൂടെ ഉയർന്നുവരുന്നു. ദേവീചൈതന്യത്തിൽ ലയിച്ച് ഒരുവർഷത്തോളം അദ്ദേഹം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭജനാനുഷ്ഠാനം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഈ തപോഭൂമിയായ ഐതിഹ്യപൂർണ്ണമായ ചൈതന്യം അതിരുകളില്ലാതെ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹം ചൊരിയുകയാണ്.
