Sree Santhanagopala Murthy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Santhana Gopalamurthy, a deity believed to bless devotees with progeny and overall well-being. കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി പുഴവാതിലാണ് പ്രശസ്തമായ സന്താന ഗോപാല മൂർത്തി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കോട്ടയത്തു നിന്ന് 20 കിലോമീറ്ററും ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 2 കിലോമീറ്ററും സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാവുന്നതാണ്.

ശംഖ്-ചക്രധാരിയും നാല് കൈകളോട് കൂടിയ പൂർണ്ണ വൈഷ്ണവ തേജസ്സിന്റെ സാക്ഷാത് രൂപവുമായ ശ്രീ വൈകുണ്ഠേശ്വര സന്താനഗോപാല മൂർത്തിയുടെ അപൂർവ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ദേവചൈതന്യം. രണ്ട് കൈകളിൽ ശംഖും സുദർശന ചക്രവും ധരിച്ചും, മറ്റേതങ്കീലുകളിൽ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിനെ കാത്തു പിടിച്ചും ദർശനം നൽകുന്ന ഈ ദേവതാ സ്വരൂപം സന്താന ഭാഗ്യം പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നവനായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളിൽ ഒന്ന് സന്താനഗോപാല വ്രതമാണിത്. കന്നിമാസത്തിലെ കറുത്തവാവ് കഴിഞ്ഞ് തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ള വെളുത്തവാവിനാണ് ഈ വ്രതം അനുഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. വ്രതാനുഷ്ഠാനത്തിന് മുമ്പ് ഒരു ദിവസം അരി ആഹാരം ഒഴിവാക്കണമെന്നതും ഭക്തി ശുദ്ധിയോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തുകയും പുഷ്പാഭിഷേകം, ദീപാരാധന എന്നിവ കാണുകയും ചെയ്യണമെന്നതുമാണ് ഈ വ്രതത്തിന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ.
വ്രത പൂർത്തിയായതിനു ശേഷം അടുത്തുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പോകുകയും തൊഴുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് വ്രതമുറിയൽ ചടങ്ങിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
