Thiruvambadi is a picturesque village located between Kaduthuruthy and Kuravilangad in Vaikom Taluk. This village is home to an ancient and beautiful Sree Krishna Swami Temple, renowned for its rare idol of Goshala Krishna.
The deity, Balagopala, is depicted as a young cowherd holding a cane and a broken horn, a unique representation rarely found elsewhere. The idol, crafted from Anjana stone, stands just two feet tall but holds immense spiritual significance.
The temple, shaped like a chariot, was once surrounded by cows that roamed freely on either side.
Remarkably, even when these cows gave birth or passed away within the temple premises, it was believed that the sanctity of the temple remained unaffected. A notable feature of the temple is the theertham (holy water) that flows from the shrine, which devotees find particularly divine. One of the temple’s distinctive offerings is palm oil, which is believed to have healing properties, especially for childhood ailments.
The village of Thiruvambadi derives its name from this sacred temple, which has a history spanning over a thousand years. The most significant festival is Ashtami Rohini, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam. On this auspicious occasion, special anointing and incarnation poojas are performed at midnight to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, making it a deeply revered event for devotees.

വൈക്കം താലൂക്കിലെ കടുത്തുരുത്തിയും കുറവിലങ്ങാടിയും ഇടയിലായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു മനോഹര ഗ്രാമമാണ് തിരുവമ്പാടി. ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ളതും മനോഹരവുമായ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതമായിരിക്കുന്ന വിഗ്രഹം അപൂർവമായ ഗോശാല കൃഷ്ണന്റേതാണ്.
കൈയിൽ ചൂരലും ഒടിഞ്ഞ കൊമ്പും പിടിച്ച പശുപാലകനായ ബാലഗോപാലന്റെ ഈ വിഗ്രഹം, അപൂർവതയാൽ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. അഞ്ജനശിലയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച, ഭാവ്യരൂപമുള്ള ഈ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന് വെറും രണ്ടടി മാത്രമാണ് ഉയരം. രഥത്തിന്റെ ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ ഇരുവശത്തും ഒരുകാലത്ത് നിരവധി പശുക്കളെ വളർത്തിയിരുന്നു.
ഇവ തൊഴിലിൽ പ്രസവിച്ചാലും മരണപ്പെട്ടാലും ക്ഷേത്രം അശുദ്ധമാകാറില്ലായിരുന്നു എന്നതും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളിലൊന്നാണ്. ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ നിന്ന് ഒഴുകിയെത്തുന്ന തീർത്ഥം ഭക്തർക്ക് ആനന്ദകരമായ അനുഭവം പകരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വിശേഷപ്രസാദങ്ങളിലൊന്നായ ഈന്തപ്പഴം കുട്ടികളിലെ പല അസുഖങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രതിവിധിയാണെന്നാണ് ഭക്തർ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത്.
ആയിരത്തിലധികം വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പ്രദേശം തിരുവമ്പാടി എന്ന പേരു ലഭിച്ചത്. ചിങ്ങമാസത്തിലെ അഷ്ടമി രോഹിണി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാന ആചാരദിനമാണ്. ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്റെ ജന്മരാത്രിയിൽ അഭിഷേകവും അവതാരപൂജകളും ആചാരപൂർവ്വം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
