Thiruvayamkudi Mahadeva Temple is a renowned Shiva temple located about 2 km west of Kaduthuruthy in Kottayam district, Kerala.
The temple is dedicated to Vaikkathappan, a form of Lord Shiva associated with the famous Vaikom Mahadeva Temple. In addition to the main deity, the temple also houses several sub-deities, including Ganapati, Sastha, Subrahmanyan, Sri Krishna, Veerabhadra, Bhadrakali, Nandikeswaran, and Naga deities.
The history of the temple is steeped in a fascinating legend. It is believed that the temple stands on the land that once belonged to a Namboothiri, a devout worshipper of Vaikkathappan.
The Namboothiri, despite his old age, used to visit the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple regularly for darshan. Unable to continue his visits due to his declining health, he prayed to Vaikkathappan, who, in his mercy, promised to stay in a place convenient for the Namboothiri. After performing a homa (fire ritual) in his home, the Namboothiri's wife discovered a Shiva lingam in the Homa Kunda, after her broom struck an object there. Miraculously, blood began to flow from the Shiva lingam.
Upon realizing that the deity he had long worshipped, Vaikkathappan, had manifested in his home, the Namboothiri and his wife joyfully worshipped the Shiva lingam. The Namboothiri inscribed sandalwood on the Shiva lingam to stop the blood flow, and the couple continued to perform Shiva Puja, dedicating their lives to the deity. Over time, their home transformed into a temple, which is now the Thiruvayamkudi Mahadeva Temple.
The main annual festival of the temple is a six-day celebration held on the sixth day of the new moon in the month of Kumbha. This festival coincides with Shivaratri. The temple is currently managed by seven Illams (traditional Kerala families).

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിൽ കടുത്തുരുത്തിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ പടിഞ്ഞാറു മാറി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് തിരുവായാംകുടി മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുഖ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ശാന്തഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ശിവനാണ്. കൂടാതെ ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, ശാസ്താവ്, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ, വീരഭദ്രൻ, ഭദ്രകാളി, നന്ദികേശ്വരൻ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവർക്കും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ ഉണ്ട്.
വൈക്കം മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ഐതിഹ്യപരമായ ബന്ധമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ വൈക്കത്തപ്പൻ തന്നെയാണെന്ന് സങ്കല്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. വൈക്കം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റേത് തന്നെയുള്ള അക്ഷാംശരേഖയിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്നത് പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് വൈക്കത്തപ്പന്റെ പരമഭക്തനായ ഒരു നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ ഇല്ലം ആയിരുന്നു. ആ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ ഹോമകുണ്ഡത്തിലുണ്ടായാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ ശിവലിംഗം ഉളവായതെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. വൈക്കത്തപ്പന്റെ അടിയുറച്ച ഭക്തനായ ഈ നമ്പൂതിരി, മുടങ്ങാതെ വൈക്കം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പോയി ദർശനം നടത്തിവന്നു. എന്നാൽ, പ്രായാധിക്യം മൂലം അദ്ദേഹം വൈക്കം വരെ നടന്നുപോയി ദർശനം നടത്തുക അസാധ്യമായിരുന്നു.
ഇതു കൊണ്ട് ദുഃഖിതനായ അദ്ദേഹം വൈക്കത്തപ്പനെ ശരണം പ്രാപിച്ചു. കരുണാമയനായ ഭഗവാൻ, നമ്പൂതിരിയ്ക്ക് പോയി ദർശനം ചെയ്യാനായി സൗകര്യമുള്ള സ്ഥലത്ത് താൻ കുടികൊള്ളുമെന്നാണ് അരുള്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞു. ഇതാനുസരിച്ച് നമ്പൂതിരി വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങി, പിന്നെ കുറെകാലം ഹോമരൂപത്തിൽ ശിവാരാധന നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
ഒരു ദിവസം, ഹോമം കഴിഞ്ഞു സാധനങ്ങൾ വൃത്തിയാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ഭാര്യയുടെ (ഇല്ലത്തെ അന്തർജന) ചൂൽ ഒരു വസ്തുവിൽ അടുക്കുകയും, അതിൽ നിന്ന് നിർത്താത്ത രക്തപ്രവാഹം ഉണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. പരിശോധന ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ, അത് സ്വയംഭൂവായ ശിവലിംഗമെന്നു മനസ്സിലായി. തുടർന്ന്, ബ്രാഹ്മണദമ്പതിയുടേത് ധാരാളമായ സന്തോഷാശ്രുക്കളോടെ, ഭാര്യയുടെ വിവരമറിഞ്ഞു, നമ്പൂതിരി ഓടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി. ശിവലിംഗത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ സാഷ്ടാംഗപ്രണാമം അർപ്പിച്ച്, തന്റെ ഹോമകുണ്ഡത്തിൽ സ്വയംഭൂവായ ആയി അവതരിച്ചതെന്ന് നമ്പൂതിരി മനസ്സിലാക്കി.
രക്തപ്രവാഹം തടയുന്നതിന്, കൈവശമുള്ള ചന്ദനം ശിവലിംഗത്തിൽ ചാർത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. പിന്നീട് ഈ ബ്രാഹ്മണദമ്പതികൾ ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വം ശിവപൂജകൾ നടത്തി ശിഷ്ടകാലം കഴിയുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇരുവരുടെയും കാലത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ളവിടെ, ഈ ഇല്ലം അന്യമായ ശേഷം, അവിടെയൊരു ക്ഷേത്രം ഉയർന്നുവന്നു. ആ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ആയാംകുടി മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം.
കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ അമാവാസി ദിനത്തിൽ ആറ് ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നടക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആണ്ടുവിശേഷം. ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിനിടെ ശിവരാത്രി ഉത്സവവും കൂടി ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
