The embodiment of the primordial divine energy is Durga. According to Shaiva beliefs, Durga represents the original form of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva. It is believed that she took on this form to vanquish the demon Mahishasura. Consequently, the name Durga is associated with the supreme power.
The color of this goddess is a vibrant green. Devi Mahatmya narrates how Durga defeated numerous foes, including Shumbha and Nishumbha, as well as Mahishasura, which is why she is also revered as Mahishasuramardini. According to the Skanda Purana, it was Goddess Parvati who defeated Mahishasura. Durga is symbolized by her sixteen arms and her ability to ride a lion, both of which signify her immense power. Various annual festivals such as Pongala, Navaratri, and Thrikkarthika are celebrated in this region.
