Vadayar Elamkavu Devi Temple is situated in Vadayar, within the Kottayam District of Kerala.
The renowned festival known as Attuvela takes place during the month of Meenam. This shrine is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, also referred to as Devi, in her fierce aspect. It is situated approximately 9 kilometers from Vaikom.
Two principal festivals are celebrated at this location. The first is the flag hosting festival, occurring in February and lasting for eight days during the Kumbha month (February - March). The second is the distinguished two-day Elamkavu Attuvela Mahotsavam, a water carnival celebrated in the Malayalam Meenam month (March-April), which features a distinctive celebration on the river.
The Attuvela festival, as per tradition, serves as a welcoming event for the Goddess of Kodungalloor, who is said to visit her sister, the Goddess of Elamkavu. Over the course of two days, the festival features elegantly lit canoes that transport a large replica of the temple, gliding across the waters alongside numerous vibrantly adorned smaller canoes, all accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of temple percussion music.
The canoe procession commences from the Attuvela Kadavu, located 2 kilometers from the temple. The principal deity of the temple is oriented towards the west. The subsidiary deities venerated within the temple include Khandkarna, Nagaraja, and Ganapathy. An area known as 'pana' is located outside the temple walls, which is linked to the Yakshi.
According to legend, the Goddess enshrined in the temple was transported from Kodungallur following a series of challenges faced by the Vadakkumkoor kingdom. Consequently, it is believed that Elamkavu Bhagavathy is the sibling of Kodungallur Bhagavathy.
It is said that the murti of the Devi was initially placed at Attuvela Kadavu, situated approximately 3 kilometers from the temple.
വടയാർ ഇളങ്കാവ് ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രം
വൈക്കത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള വടയാറിന്റെ ഓരത്താണ് വടയാർ ഇളങ്കാവ് ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ ഭഗവതിയുടെ സഹോദരിയായ ഇളങ്കാവ് ദേവിക്ക് ദേശക്കാർ നൽകുന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കാഴ്ച നൈവേദ്യമുണ്ട് ആറ്റുവേലച്ചാട്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ആറ്റുവേലക്കടവിൽ നിന്ന് രണ്ട് വലിയ വള്ളങ്ങളിലായി നിർമ്മിച്ച മൂന്നു നിലയുള്ള താത്ക്കാലിക ക്ഷേത്രം പുഴയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകി വരുന്നതാണ് ആറ്റുവേല. ആറ്റുവേല മഹോത്സവം ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു ആഘോഷമാണ്. മീന മാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാളിൽ ആറ്റുവേല ദർശനം നടക്കുന്നു.
മുവാറ്റുപുഴ ആറിൻറെ ഓളപ്പരപ്പിൽ താള മേളയുടെ ലയവിന്യാസം ഒരുക്കി, ആറ്റുവേല കടവിൽ എത്തുന്ന തൂക്കച്ചാടുകൾ ആറ്റുവേലക്ക് ആകർഷണം നൽകും. തൂക്കചാടുകളിലെ ഗരുഡൻമാർ ആടിത്തിമർത്തുന്ന ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ കാണാൻ ഭക്തർ ആറിൻറെ ഇരുകരകളിലും നിറ ദീപം തെളിയിച്ച് കാത്തിരിക്കും.
മീനമാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവത്തിനായി ആറ്റുവേലച്ചാടിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം ഒരാഴ്ച മുമ്പ് ആരംഭിക്കും. വടയാർ ഇളങ്കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന പിണ്ടിപ്പഴുത് ചടങ്ങാണ് ആറ്റുവേലയുടെ തുടക്കം. 64 തൂശനിലകളിൽ നിവേദ്യങ്ങൾ നിരത്തുകയും, കുമ്പളങ്ങയുടെ നടുവിൽ മുറിച്ച് അതിൽ ഗുരുതി നിറക്കുകയും, നാളികേരം നടുവിൽ മുറിച്ച് ചെത്തിപ്പൂ അതിലിട്ടു രാശി നോക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് പിണ്ടിപ്പഴുത് ചടങ്ങ് .
രണ്ടു വലിയ കേവ് വള്ളങ്ങൾ ചേർത്ത് ചങ്ങാടം തീർത്ത്, അതിൽ തേക്കിൻ കഴകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് മൂന്നു നിലകളിലായി ആറ്റുവേലച്ചാടിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം നടത്തപ്പെട്ടു. പൂർത്തിയായ ചാട് രാവിലെ രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ മറവൻതുരുത്ത് പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ ആറ്റുവേല കടവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ജലമാർഗം പുറപ്പെടും.
അവിടെ നിന്നും മീന മാസത്തിലെ അശ്വതി നാളിൽ രാത്രി, സർവാഭരണ വിഭൂഷിതയായ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ ഭഗവതിയെ മുകളിലത്തെ നിലയിൽ എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ച്, ആറ്റുവേല കടവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പുറകളിൽ ഗുരുതി നടത്തി ഇളങ്കാവിലേക്കു പുറപ്പെടും.
മുവാറ്റുപുഴ ആറിലൂടെ വട്ടം കറങ്ങി പുലർച്ചയോടെ ക്ഷേത്ര കടവിൽ എത്തും. ക്ഷേത്ര മതിലിനു പുറത്ത് പ്രത്യേകമായി തയാറാക്കിയ പള്ളിസ്രാമ്പിലേക്ക് ഭഗവതിയെ എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ച് ഗരുഡൻമാർ ചൂണ്ട കുത്തും. തുടർന്ന് പീലി തൂക്കം, കര തൂക്കം എന്നിവയും നടക്കും.
