Velloor Sree Vamana Swamy temple is a unique shrine devoted to the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu.
The principal temple is designed in the form of an elephant's head, featuring a semi-circular rear and an elongated rectangular front; it is the sole Vamana temple constructed in this particular style. The foundation stone indicates that the temple's origins date back to the 12th century, with subsequent restorations occurring in 1952.
It is believed that the idol housed within this temple is of ancient origin, estimated to be over 1500 years old, and was utilized by Arjuna during his period of exile.
Subsequently, a revered brahmin experienced a dream revealing the existence of such a remarkable idol in the riverbed (the Muvattupuzha River flows in close proximity to this temple), leading to its retrieval and installation in the temple. Given that the idol was sourced from water (with "water" translating to "vellam" and "town" to "ooru" in Malayalam), the location acquired the name Velloor.
വെള്ളൂർ ശ്രീ വാമനസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
വെള്ളൂർ വാമനസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ പിറവംറോഡ് റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ നിന്ന് അര കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ വാമന അവതാരത്തിനായി സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിൽ പത്തോളം വാമന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ നിലവിലുണ്ട്. പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ആനപൃഷ്ഠാകൃതിയുള്ള രൂപം, അർദ്ധവൃത്താകൃതിയിലുള്ള പിൻഭാഗവും നീളമുള്ള ദീർഘചതുരാകൃതിയിലുള്ള മുൻഭാഗവും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു; ഈ പ്രത്യേക രൂപത്തിലുള്ള വാമന ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിൽ വെല്ലൂരിൽ മാത്രമാണ് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രാരംഭ കാലഘട്ടം പന്ത്രണ്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലാണെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു, പിന്നീട് 1952-ൽ പുനരുദ്ധാരണം നടത്തപ്പെട്ടതായി രേഖകളിൽ കാണുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ രണ്ട് ശ്രീകോവിലുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വിഗ്രഹം 1500 വർഷത്തിലേറെ പഴക്കമുള്ള പുരാതന വിഗ്രഹമാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അർജ്ജുനൻ തന്റെ വനവാസ കാലത്ത് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന വിഗ്രഹമാണെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. പിന്നീട്, ഒരു അനുഗ്രഹീത ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ നദീതീരത്ത് (മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയാർ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനടുത്ത് ഒഴുകുന്നു) സ്വപ്നം കാണുകയും, അവിടെ നിന്നു വിഗ്രഹം എടുത്ത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
വിഗ്രഹം വെള്ളത്തിൽ നിന്നുണ്ടായതിനാൽ, ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് വെള്ളൂർ എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചതായി ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. വെള്ളൂർ വാമനസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം, കേരളത്തിലെ അപൂർവ്വമായ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്, അതിന്റെ പ്രത്യേക ആകൃതിയാൽ (ഗജപൃഷ്ടാകൃതി) ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. പെരുന്തച്ചനാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിതതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ആനയും വെടിക്കെട്ടുമില്ല എന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
