Vijayapuram Sri Krishnaswamy Temple is a famous temple located 8 kilometers from Kottayam, in the Manarkad region.
According to local legend, during the period of the Pandavas' exile, Arjuna, a devoted follower of Lord Krishna, constructed a temple and made this area his home, which led to the designation of Vijayapuram, signifying the place where Arjuna (Vijayan) resided.
Since 1968, Manarkad has served as the administrative center for the Vijayapuram Panchayat. Historically, Manarkad was a forest dedicated to serpent worship under the governance of the Thekkumkoor dynasty. It is believed that the rulers of Thekkumkoor frequented this location for the purpose of serpent worship.
The area was referred to as 'Mannar' forest, named after the king (Mannan) who presided over the serpent worship practices. Over time, this name evolved into Manarkad. According to ancient sources, the junction known as Manarkad was originally called Nayadimattam.

വിജയപുരം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കോട്ടയം പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും 8 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ മണർകാടിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. പാണ്ഡവരുടെ വനവാസകാലത്ത് കൃഷ്ണഭക്തനായ അർജുനൻ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിച്ചുവെന്നും, അർജുനൻ (വിജയൻ) വസിച്ച സ്ഥലമായതിനാൽ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് വിജയപുരം എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചതായും ഐതീഹ്യമുണ്ട്.
മണർകാട്, തെക്കുംകൂർ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ അധീനതയിൽ സർപ്പാരാധന നടത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള കാടായിരുന്നു. സർപ്പ പൂജയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി തെക്കുംകൂർ രാജാക്കന്മാർ ഇവിടെ സന്ദർശിക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
മന്നൻറെ (രാജാവിൻറെ) അധീനതയിൽ സർപ്പ പൂജ നടന്ന കാടായതിനാൽ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് “മന്നാർ” കാട് എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചതായും, പിന്നീട് അത് മണർകാട് ആയി മാറിയെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. മണർകാട് കവലയുടെ പഴയ പേര് നായാടിമറ്റം എന്നാണെന്നും പഴമക്കാർ പറയുന്നു.
