Kovoor Sree Vishnu Temple is an ancient temple located in the Kovoor region, very close to the city of Kozhikode in Kerala.
The main deity is Lord Mahavishnu, enshrined in an eastern-facing idol in his divine avatar form.
According to legend, the temple was originally under Brahmin management, and both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Durga were prominently worshipped here in ancient times. It is believed that this sacred site was once a holy ground where a revered yogi performed intense penance and later installed the deity for worship. The temple is estimated to be around 2,500 years old.
In 1988, the Deva Giri NSS Karayogam handed over the temple to the Kerala Temple Protection Committee. Since then, restoration and renovation works have been gradually carried out under the committee’s leadership, elevating the temple to the status of a prominent religious center in the city.Important festivals and observances at the temple include Pratishta Day, celebrated on the Makayiram (Makha) star in the Malayalam month of Edavam, along with Ashtami Rohini, Vishu, Onam, and Navaratri.
The temple also observes the sacred Ramayana month (Karkidakam) with Ramayana Parayanam (recitations), and hosts special rituals like Bhagavathi Seva and Ganapathi Homam. Naga Pooja is performed on the Ayilyam star in the month of Kumbham, while Naga Pratishta Day is celebrated on the Moolam star in the month of Medam. These occasions are marked by special poojas, cultural programs, and spiritual discourses, attracting devotees from across the region.
കോവൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം
കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിനടുത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന കോവൂർ ദേശത്തിലെ ഒരു പൗരാണിക ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കോവൂർ ശ്രീ വിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം. കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനത്തോടെ, അവതാരവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ രൂപത്തിലാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ഇതു വരെ ലഭ്യമായ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച്, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഒരു കാലത്ത് ബ്രാഹ്മണാധിപത്യമുള്ളതായിരുന്നെന്നും അതിനുശേഷം വിഷ്ണുവിനെയും ദുർഗാദേവിയേയും പ്രധാനമായും ഇവിടെ ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്നതായും കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലം ഒരു യോഗിവര്യൻ തപസ്സു നടത്തിയ പുണ്യഭൂമിയാണെന്നും, ആ യോഗി തന്നെ ഇവിടേയ്ക്കുള്ള പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തി ഭക്ത്യാടകരായി ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്നെന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ഏകദേശം 2500 വർഷത്തെ പുരാതനത്വം ഉള്ളതായാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. 1988-ൽ ദേവഗിരി എൻ.എസ്.എസ് കരയോഗം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കേരള ക്ഷേത്ര സംരക്ഷണ സമിതിയ്ക്ക് കൈമാറുകയും, അന്ന് മുതൽ പുനരുദ്ധാരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ സമിതിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടപ്പാക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളും ചടങ്ങുകളും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി നടത്തുന്ന കോവൂർ ശ്രീ വിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ, എടവ മാസത്തിലെ മകയിരം നാൾ ക്ഷേത്ര പ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനമായി ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിനോടൊപ്പം അഷ്ടമിരോഹിണി, വിഷു, ഓണം, നവരാത്രി എന്നീ പ്രധാന ഹിന്ദു പർവങ്ങളും ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. കർക്കിടക മാസത്തിൽ രാമായണ പാരായണവും, രാമായണ ക്വിസ് മത്സരവും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഭഗവതിസേവ, ഗണപതിഹോമം, നാഗപൂജ തുടങ്ങിയ ചടങ്ങുകൾക്കും പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്.
കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ആയില്യം നാളിൽ നാഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും, മേടമാസത്തിലെ മൂലം നക്ഷത്രദിനത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും ചടങ്ങുകളും നടത്തപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ എല്ലാ ആഘോഷദിവസങ്ങളിലും ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ സാനിധ്യം നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നു, കൂടാതെ വിവിധ പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങളും സാംസ്കാരിക പരിപാടികളും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അരങ്ങേറുന്നു.
