Sreekanteswara Temple, located in the heart of Kozhikode (Calicut), is one of Kerala’s most celebrated shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Its origins lie in a 1907 decision by prominent members of the Thiyya community to establish a Shiva temple in the city; the foundation stone was laid in 1908, and construction proceeded swiftly thanks to generous contributions from devotees.
In May 1910, Sree Narayana Guru himself consecrated the temple’s Shivalinga—carried in procession from its crafting site at Kallingal Kshetra and ritually purified by immersion in the Arabian Sea—on 12 May 1910. Built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, the temple makes extensive use of locally quarried laterite stone and features characteristic red-clay tile roofs. The original master mason, Kadathanattu Kunhiraman Ashari, was succeeded by Shankunni Nair Kutty Ashari and Mangalathu Krishnan Ashari; today, eminent sculptor Olavaara T.V. Kunhiraman Melassery oversees all renovation and expansion work.
The sanctum sanctorum houses Lord Shiva as the principal deity, flanked by upadevatas—Lord Subrahmanya, Sree Ganapathi, Sree Dharma Shastha, Maha Vishnu, Bhagavathi and the Navagraha. The shrines of Subramanya and Dharma Shastha lie just outside the chuttambalam (covered courtyard).
Daily worship hours are from 5:00 am to 12:15 pm and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Among its chief rites (Vazhipadus), the Shodashabhishekam—a sixteen‑step ablution ceremony—is performed to ward off illness and promote good health.
Other popular offerings include the Udayasthamana Pooja, Paarvathy Parameswara Pooja and Umeshanu Pooja. Conveniently situated just 450 metres from the Mofussil Bus Stand and 2.3 kilometres from Kozhikode Railway Station, Sreekanteswara Temple remains a vital centre of devotion and culture in the city.
ശ്രീ കണ്ഠേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം
ശ്രീനാരായണ ഗുരുദേവർ ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയ ദിവ്യക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ശ്രീകണ്ഠേശ്വരം, പുത്തിയമ്പലം എന്ന പേരിലും ഇത് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ദൂരെനിന്ന് ശ്രീനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ സന്ദർശിക്കാൻ വരുന്ന യാത്രികർക്കായി ക്ഷേത്രമുറ്റത്ത് സൗജന്യ താമസസൗകര്യം വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.
പടിപുര കടന്നുചേരുമ്പോൾ വലതുഭാഗത്ത് വിശാലമായ യാഗശാലയും, നടുവിൽ നാല്ഭാഗങ്ങളായി ചുറ്റമ്പലങ്ങളുമുള്ള ദീപസ്തംഭവും, ആൽത്തറ, നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപം, ഗജമണ്ഡപം, ഓഡിറ്റോറിയം, ചിത്രമണ്ഡപം, തടാകം എന്നിവയുടെ സംയുക്തപ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടെയുള്ള വിസ്തൃത ഭവനശൃംഖല കാണാം.
പ്രദക്ഷിണവീഥിയിൽ ആദ്യം ശ്രീനാരായണ ഗുരുവിന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാ‌കോവിലും, അടുത്തോർന്ന മേഖലയിൽ വിഷ്ണുപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും, പിന്നീട് ഗണപതി–ശാസ്താ ദുഉപപ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും, വടക്കുഭാഗത്തായി പാർവതി ദേവിയുടെ കോവിലും, നേരെ മുന്നിലേക്ക് മഹാ പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഇത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തെ പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് നല്ലീശ്വരംമഠം എന്നും വിളിച്ചെടുത്തിരുന്നു. തിരുവിതാംകൂരിലെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളെ മറികടന്ന് ഇവിടെ അനുയോജ്യസ്ഥലമായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത്, ഗുരുദേവൻ കുത്തിനാടൽ കര്‍മ്മം നടത്തി ക്ഷേത്രനിര്‍മ്മാണത്തിന് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചുകയോട്ടം. ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠയ്ക്ക് “ശ്രീകണ്ഠേശ്വരൻ” എന്നാനാമകരണം ചെയ്ത്, ‘മലബാറിലെ മധുരം’ എന്നർത്ഥത്തിൽ വരുംകാലം അനുഗ്രഹമാകുമെന്ന് അരുൾചെയ്തുവെന്നത് ഇതിന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യമാണിത്.ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മുന്‍ മണ്ഢപത്തിൽ ദേവിയുടെ വാഹനം മാത്രമല്ല, ഋഷഭരൂപിയായ നന്ദികേശനും അഭിഷേകത്തോടെ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.
മണ്ഢപത്തിലെ മീനക്കോണിലേക്ക് ചേർന്ന കിണറിന് തൊട്ടുഭാഗത്താണ് പ്രാചീന നല്ലീശ്വരശിവന്റേ വിഗ്രഹമായ ശിവലിംഗം കണ്ടെത്തിതന്നതും, പിന്നീട് ശാസ്ത്രീയ ചടങ്ങുകളോടുകൂടിയാണ് അത് ഇവിടെ സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. ക്ഷേത്രനിർമാണത്തിനായി മണ്ണ് നീക്കി വരികയിലാണ് ഈ ദിവ്യലിംഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.
ഈ ശിവലിംഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി ഉത്സവം ആഹ്ലാദകരമായി ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ശിവരാത്രി ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ കരിങ്കടലോരത്ത് കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രാംവൃത്തം നിറയലയ്ക്കാൻ എത്തുന്നത് ദിവ്യദർശനാനുഭവമായിട്ടാണ്.
