Sri Shakthan Kulangara Temple, located in Koyilandy, Kozhikode, is a revered temple dedicated to Goddess Devi.
This is a very old Devi temple. The presiding deity, Sri Viyyur Bhagavathi, is worshipped as the formless, all-creating Divine Mother, the source of life and sustenance for all living beings, and the embodiment of all auspiciousness. Viyyur Sri Shaktan Kulangara Temple is one of the most ancient temples in North Malabar.
Kanalaatt Mahotsavam, the grand fire festival celebrated here, is especially famous in the region. The temple’s chief priest (Tantri) is Brahmashri Kubera Somayajippad of the Chyavanappuzha Mundott Puliyaparampathu Illam, who leads the rituals during the festival.
Kanalaatt Mahotsavam is considered one of the major traditional rural temple festivals in Malabar. It is celebrated annually in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). The festivities begin with the ceremonial cutting of the “Theeyattu Maram” (a sacred ritual tree) and continue for a week.
The main ritual, Kanalaattam, is a ceremonial fire dance that is part of performances such as Theeyattu, Thirayattam, Theyyaattam, and Komarattam. In Theeyattu dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, there's a special performance known as Kanalaattam. The fire is created by stacking jackfruit tree wood in three different spots. The Komaram (oracle) dances barefoot on the burning embers, a visually stunning and spiritually intense ritual. The Kanalaatt Mahotsavam is also celebrated as a symbol of religious harmony in the region of Meppayyur.
Thousands of devotees from various castes and religions come together to witness and participate in the celebrations.
Another major attraction of the festival is the vibrant “Desa Varavukal” – colorful and diverse traditional processions featuring Poothan, Vaikkol Poothan, Thira, Kattalanmaar, Theyyam, Karinkali, mythological characters, vibrant traditional costumes, various percussion ensembles, and vividly decorated parasols.
The festival ground also serves as a bustling marketplace for rural goods – from clay artifacts, bamboo and palm-leaf household items, ornaments, puffed rice, flattened rice, sweets, to a wide variety of traditional delicacies – all are easily available during the festival.
Adding to the excitement is the night-time fireworks display, which enhances the festive mood. കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലെ കൊയിലാണ്ടിയിൽ നിന്ന് വെറും 12 മിനിറ്റ് യാത്ര ചെയ്താൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്ന ഒരു അതിപ്രസിദ്ധവും അതിപുരാതനവുമായ ദേവിക്ഷേത്രമാണ് മേപ്പയൂർ ശ്രീ ശക്തൻകുളങ്ങര ക്ഷേത്രം. സകല ജീവജാലങ്ങളെയും സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിനും ഉല്ലാസത്തിനും ആധാരമാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന അരൂപിണിയായ, സർവ്വമംഗളമായ ശ്രീ ഭഗവതിയാണ് ഇവിടെ പതിവായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.

ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമായ കനലാട്ട മഹോത്സവം മലബാറിൽ ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്.മലയാളം മാസമായ കുംഭത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഈ കനലാട്ട മഹോത്സവം, ഒരു ആഴ്ച നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ആഘോഷപരമ്പരയാണ്. 'തീയാട്ട് മരം മുറി'യോടെ മഹോത്സവത്തിന് തുടക്കമാകും. കനലാട്ടം എന്നത് അനുഷ്ഠാനപരമായ ഒരു അഗ്നിനൃത്തമാണ്. തീയാട്ട്, തെയ്യം, തിറ, കോമരം തുടങ്ങിയ നാടൻകലകളിൽ കനലാട്ടം ഒരു പ്രധാന ഘടകമാണ്.
പ്ലാവിന്റെ വിറക് മൂന്നു സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ കൂട്ടിയുയർത്തി കനലാക്കുകയും അതിൽ കോമരം അണിയിച്ചവർ അഗ്നിയിലൂടെ കയറി നൃത്തം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. നാനാജാതി മതസ്ഥരുടെ പങ്കാളിത്തം ഈ ഉത്സവം അതീവ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാക്കുന്നു.
മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന ആകർഷണമായി മാറുന്ന ഘടകമാണ് ദേശവരവുകൾ. പൂതൻ, വൈക്കോൽപൂതൻ, തെയ്യം, കരിങ്കാളി തുടങ്ങിയവർ അടങ്ങുന്ന വരവുകളിൽ പുരാണ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും താടിപ്പറ്റിയ വേഷങ്ങൾ അണിഞ്ഞ കലാകാരന്മാരും ചേർന്നാണ് മനോഹരമായ ദൃശ്യവിരുന്ന് ഒരുക്കുന്നത്.
തെയ്യത്തിലും തിറയാട്ടത്തിലും വിവിധ തരം വാദ്യങ്ങളുടെയും ആനകളുടെയും കലാപരിപാടികളുടെയും കൂട്ടായ്മ കാഴ്ചയുടെ ആനന്ദം ഇരട്ടിയാക്കുന്നു.
ഉത്സവപരമ്പരയുടെ ഭാഗമായുള്ള ഉത്സവപ്പറമ്പ് ഗ്രാമീണ ഉൽപ്പന്നങ്ങളുടെ വിപണിയായും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. മൺ പാത്രങ്ങൾ, മുളകൊണ്ട് നിർമിച്ച ഹസ്തകലകളും, പൊരി, നുറുക്ക്, പലതരം മിഠായികളും, കൈതോല കൊണ്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ച അലങ്കാര വസ്തുക്കളും ഇവിടെ ലഭ്യമാണ്.
മഹോത്സവം അവസാനിക്കുന്ന രാത്രിയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന കരിമരുന്നു പ്രയോഗം മഹോത്സവത്തിന് മാറ്റ് കൂട്ടുന്നു.
