Sree Thiruvangayur Shiva Temple, located in Karayad, Meppayur in Kozhikode district, is an ancient and sacred temple nestled atop a hill known as Thevar Kunnu.
The sanctum of Thiruvangayurappan is believed to have been consecrated over 5000 years ago by sages, and from the very beginning, the divine presence of Lord Shiva has been worshipped here in the glow of traditional ghee lamps.
Positioned significantly above sea level, the temple sits upon a massive rock formation, radiating spiritual energy.
Approaching the temple involves climbing 108 ancient steps, lined with sacred arayal (fig) trees, echoing with chants of the Panchakshari mantra. At the summit, 18 additional granite steps lead to the temple premises, where the dhwajastambha (flagpole) and balikkalpura (sacrificial altar) stand prominently. Even during severe droughts, the temple’s water needs are met effortlessly thanks to miraculous fresh-water springs.
Legend says that in ancient times, a devoted woman who carried water uphill faced difficulty due to her old age. She prayed at the sanctum, and one night had a divine vision warning not to witness certain midnight occurrences. That night, a blinding light and a thunderous noise erupted from the temple. The next morning, the rock had split open, and seven sacred springs—known as Sapta Tirthas—began to flow.
An offering bowl once lost in one of these springs was later recovered by fishermen at sea, who returned it to the temple upon recognizing its origin.
They were honored for their devotion and gesture, according to local tradition.
The temple uniquely features two Shiva Lingams and also houses a sacred Vishnu deity, worshipped with equal reverence. Other sub-deities include Lord Ganapati, Goddess Bhagavathi, Lord Ayyappa, and serpent deities enshrined in the Nagakkavu.
Nearby is a temple pond that includes the site for the ritual bath (Aarattukadavu).
Important festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri in the month of Kumbham, Thiruvathira in Dhanu, and the Mandalakalam season. പ്രാചീനകാലം മുതൽ നെയ്യ് വിളക്കിന്റെ ദീപശോഭയാൽ പൂജിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഈ ദേവാലയം, പരമാത്മ ചൈതന്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രഭാവത്തോടെ ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം ചൊരിയുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള 108 പൗരാണിക പടികളിലും, ശ്രീകോവിലിന് മുന്നിലുള്ള 18 കരിങ്കൽപടികളിലും അഴിമതിരിയാതെ ശുദ്ധിയും ഭക്തിയും നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ദ്വാരത്തിൽനിന്ന് ഉച്ചത്തിൽ ഉയരുന്ന ധ്വജസ്തംഭവും, ബലികല്ലും ആഴമുള്ള ഭക്തിഭാവം പകരുന്നു. കടുത്ത വരൾച്ചകളിലും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ആവശ്യമായ വെള്ളം ലഭ്യമാകുന്ന ഒരു തെളിനീർ ഉറവിടം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്.
പുരാതന കാലത്ത് ജലം ശേഖരിക്കാൻ എത്തിയ കഴകക്കാരിക്ക് പ്രായം കാരണമായി വല്ല്യ പ്രയാസങ്ങൾ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നതോടെ, അവർ തിരുനടയിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഒരു ദിവ്യദർശനം ലഭിക്കുന്നു. അതിന്റെ പിന്നാലെ രാത്രി സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ നടന്നു സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ ആകർഷണമായും, ആശ്വാസമായും മാറി. കരിമ്പാറ പൊട്ടി സപ്തതീർത്ഥങ്ങളായി ഒഴുകിയ ഉറവകൾക്ക് പിന്നിലെ കഥ, ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അതിൽ വീണുപോയ ഓട്ടുപാത്രം കടലിൽ നിന്ന് വീണ്ടും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചതും, ആ മുക്കുവരെ ആദരിച്ചതുമുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യവും അവിടെയുണ്ട്.
ഇവിടെയുള്ള പ്രധാനശിവലിംഗം കൂടാതെ മറ്റൊരു ശിവലിംഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും, തുല്യമായ ഭക്തിയോടെ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന വിഷ്ണുപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതിയും, ഭഗവതിയും, അയ്യപ്പനും; നാഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും ഈ ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ആരാധനാലയത്തിനോട് ചേർന്നിരിക്കുന്ന ആറാട്ടുകടവും ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളവും ഈ പ്രാചീനതയുടെ സാക്ഷികളാണ്.
പ്രധാന ഉത്സവദിനങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രിയും, ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിരയും, മണ്ഡലകാല ദിനങ്ങളും വലുതായി ആചരിക്കുന്നു.
