Varakkal Sree Durga Devi Temple is located in West Hill, within the city limits of Kozhikode. It is believed to be one of the 108 Durga temples consecrated by Lord Parasurama.
Varakkal Devi Temple in Kozhikode is believed to be the 108th and final Devi temple established by Sree Parasurama, the legendary sage credited with the creation of Kerala. According to legend, Parasurama ploughed this land to invoke the presence of the Goddess.
The temple is especially renowned for the Vavu Bali ritual, during which thousands gather to perform ancestral rites. Interestingly, on this sacred day, the sea remains unusually calm, as if in harmony with the solemn ceremonies taking place.

കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വരക്കൽ ഭാഗത്തേക്ക് ഏകദേശം 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ, ഏകദേശം 8 മിനിറ്റിൽ വരക്കൽ ശ്രീ ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തിക്കോളാം. ശ്രീ പരശുരാമൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച 108 ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ അവസാനത്തേതായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം എന്നുള്ളത് വിശ്വാസമാണ്.
ശ്രീദേവിയെ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനായി ഈ പ്രദേശം മുഴുവൻ പരശുരാമൻ ഉഴുതുവെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളിലുണ്ട്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവദിനം കർക്കിടക മാസത്തിലെ കറുത്തവാവിനാണ്. അന്നേ ദിവസം പിതൃദേവതകൾക്ക് തർപ്പണം നടത്തുവാൻ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നു. അത്ഭുതകരമായ വിധത്തിൽ ആ ദിവസം കടൽ അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായ ഒരു ശാന്തതയും സമാധാനവും കൈവരിക്കുന്നതായും ജനവിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്.
